As the season winds down towards the final weekend and playoffs, the team appreciates the support from all of our fans and families. Last weekend in New Hampshire, senior outside hitter Lizzie Cheek became the all-time Le Moyne College Volleyball Program leader in kills with a 24 kill performance as we defeated Franklin Pierce University 3-2. Lizzie overtook Lindsey (Fattey) DiGiacomo, '06, who had become the all time leader on the final night of her career in the playoffs at the end of the 2005 season. Our entire volleyball family congratulates Lizzie for her milestone.

In the near future you will be receiving a letter from Athletic Director Matt Bassett with some exciting news about the current projects and key priorities underway in our athletic department. He will also be asking fo r you to consider becoming a member of the Gold Wave for the 2009-2010 year. You can support our volleyball program directly by returning th e pledge card from that mailing, or you can simply click on the Gold Wave's "SUPPORT THE 'PHINS" prompt below and make your gift online.

In the midst of our very tough conference play, the volleyball team has asked, and has been approved to wear red jerseys on Sunday, Oct 18 in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and all of those people, young and old, that are being treated for these two illnesses. Our opponents for the day, St Michael’s College will be wearing red hair ribbons to show their support. Please wear red, our “one day volleyball school color” on Oct 18 and join us for this event. The local chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will provide literature.

Thank you very much.

A big thanks to all that helped make the Homecoming Weekend such a success, both on and  off of the volleyball court.  We had a great 3-2 win over a very strong Southern Connecticut State University to run our record to 10-2 in this young season.

The highlights of the day, besides some great NE-10 volleyball, included welcoming back some of our beloved alumni as well as presenting the 7th Annual Kyle Coggins Heart and Sportsmanship Award.  This memorial award is given to the volleyball team member that most exemplifies the characteristics that were demonstrated daily by Kyle as he assisted our volleyball team from 2000-2002.  Voted by team members only, each winner can take with her the knowledge that her hard work, regardless of court time, did not go unnoticed.  The winner from the 2008-09 team was Michele Murray, a junior biology major from Rockaway Pk (Queens), NY.  Her constant positive and upbeat personality along with her intense court presence put her at the top of the voting.

Former winners in attendance were:
2003-2004: Kristi (Edmunds) Dreschler '05
2004-2005: Marissa Cuervo '06
2005-2006: Emily O'Hara '07
2006-2007: Julie McLaud '07
2007-2008: Jodi Smith '09, who arrived a little late due to a grad class at U of Buffalo.

The other alumni that were at the alumni day festivities, which included an alumni volleyball match that follo wed the Dolphins match, and a great meal at Angotti's Family Restaurant, were:  Dr. Danielle Cunningham '99, Jenny Wilson '99,  Lauren (Goess) Belknap '02 (team asst coach), Lindsey (Fattey) DiGiacomo '06,  Karla Hardy '07, and Kristin O'Kane '08 (team manager '06 and '07).

One more thanks goes out to the continued support by John and Sue Fattey and Rudy and Debbie Cuervo, parents of Lindsey and Marissa, respectively.  I cannot think of many, if at all, match days that they weren't in the crowd cheering on the dolphins and their daughters.  Now, four seasons later, they still show that support, and it is appreciated!!!

Dear Le Moyne Volleyball fans:

The Le Moyne College Volleyball team will present the 7th Annual Kyle Coggins Heart & Sportsmanship award just before its match on Sept. 26 vs. Southern Connecticut State  University, slated to start at 11AM.  This award is to honor the memory of Kyle, who passed away during finals week in 2003.  Kyle had been a tireless worker, helper and supporter of the team.  Past winners include: 2003: Stefanie Smith '06, 2004: Kristi (Edmunds) Dreschler '05, 2005: Marissa Cuervo '06, 2006: Emily O'Hara '07, 2007: Julie McLaud '07, and 2008: Jodi Smith '09.  The 2009 winner will be announced at the ceremony.  With family weekend and volleyball alumni day taking place, it is our hope that those of you that knew and loved Kyle will be present.

For three volleyball seasons, Kyle Coggins was a fixture with the volleyball program.  Where his volleyball skills saw limits, his enthusiasm, heart and effervescent personality had no limit.  He came into the gym with a smile and helped the practice sessions in any way asked of him.  Following his passing, the team came to me with the suggestion for some kind of memorial.  The Kyle Coggins Heart & Sportsmanship Award was born.  Mike Stephens, my assistant at that time, and currently the head coach at Oklahoma Panhandle University, wrote the dedication.  He had coached Kyle on the men's club team for a year.  Each year the dedication is read just before the award winner is  announced.  It is very difficult to read this without tears forming, even after 6 years.  There are no current players that knew Kyle, so we look to educate them yearly. It is our hope that from this they understand volleyball, and sports in general, can be a vehicle to so much more than just count stats and standings.  The relationships they will make will affect them for a lifetime.

Dear Le Moyne Volleyball fans:

The 2009-10 volleyball team begins it's preseason with the largest roster in the school's history.  With the challenges that a large roster may present, the quality of each student-athlete on the roster is so strong, that we are looking forward to a very interesting season.   Returning players have seen each of the incoming new players and know the high level of skill that they bring. The new players have seen the returning players and know the motivation that they have to make 2009-10 a very successful year.  Senior tri-captains Lindsey Gleason, Kaylin Brainerd and Lizzie Cheek will lead this group to the court and hopefully a 12th post-season in the 14 years that we have been part of the Northeast-10.  Stay tuned for updates on the team as the season progresses.
