Pete Hoy joined the Dolphins as the pitching coach in 1998. A
former standout on the mound, Hoy returned to the Heights to coach
after his professional career ended. Le Moyne's pitching staff has
flourished under Hoy's leadership, finishing second in the nation
with a 3.62 earned-run average in 1998.
Hoy has seen seven Le Moyne pitchers drafted in the Major
League Baseball amateur draft since his arrival. Righty hurler
Bobby Blevins was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2007,
Junior converted closer Andre Enriquez was chosen by the Washington
Nationals in 2005, righty Matt Scherer was drafted by the St. Louis
Cardinals in 2004, seniors Brian Mattoon (Texas Rangers) and Andy
Weimer (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) were selected in the 2003 draft,
junior Chris Barlow was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 2002 and
senior Jaime Steward was picked by the Anaheim Angels in 2001.
Hoy was drafted himself as a Le Moyne junior in the 33rd round of the 1987 draft by the Boston Red Sox. A native of Cardinal, Ontario, he pitched in the Red Sox organization for five years culminating with his big league debut in 1992. Hoy had the distinction of striking out Dave Winfield for his first major league strikeout. He was also a member of the 1988 Canadian Olympic Team which featured future big leaguers Matt Stairs and Rheal Cormier.
While at Le Moyne, Hoy compiled a 19-5 win-loss record. He posted a 2.02 earned-run average and fanned 139 batters in 164.2 innings of work.
Two of his teams advanced to the NCAA Division II Regionals, and he was a member of Le Moyne's first Divsion I team, which played in the ECAC Championships. He was enshrined in the Le Moyne College Gold Wave Hall of Fame in 2003.
Hoy, who has a Le Moyne degree in history, and his wife Lisa
live in DeWitt with their daughter Madison.
