BASEBALL SWEEPS NEW HAVEN IN SOUTHWEST DIVISION DOUBLEHEADER, 10-4, 3-2

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) had three hits and four RBI in the opener and freshman pitcher Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in the nightcap as the Le Moyne College baseball team swept the University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins won the opener, 10-4, and held on for a 3-2 win in the nightcap.

The Dolphins got the scoring started in the opener with two runs two batters into the inning. After junior center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) led off with a single up the middle, Charbonneau blasted his second career home run over the fence in left field.

New Haven used two hits to trim its deficit in half in the second. Catcher TJ Riccio led off with a single to left field and then took second on a walk by first baseman Andrew Garcia. After a walk by left fielder PJ Contreras in between a pair of outs, shortstop Nick Russo singled through the left side to plate Riccio.

Le Moyne answered with two runs on two hits and one New Haven error in the third. Senior shortstop/pitcher Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to start the frame and then advanced to third on a single to right field by freshman right fielder David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day). Swetman then scored on a sacrifice bunt by redshirt junior left fielder Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant). After a groundout, Charbonneau tripled to right field to drive in David DiNorcia.

The Dolphins extended their lead to 8-1 in the fourth with four runs on three hits. Swetman led off with a single to right center and then stole second. After a walk by David DiNorcia and a pair of groundouts, Charbonneau singled up the middle to drive in Swetman, while taking second on the throw home. Junior catcher/third baseman Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) followed with a single up the middle of his own to plate David DiNorcia and Charbonneau. After Levanti stole third, he scored on a wild pitch.

Le Moyne pushed its lead to 9-1 in the seventh with one run on two hits and one New Haven error. Senior third baseman/first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) singled to left with one out and advanced to third on a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. Senior designated hitter/catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) followed with a single to left field to knock in Wright.

New Haven cut its deficit to 9-4 with three runs on three hits in the eighth inning. After pinch-hitters Alex Palmieri and Eddie Tammaro singled with one out, Garcia launched a three-run home run to right center.

The Dolphins completed the game's scoring in the bottom of the eighth with one run on two hits. Donato DiNorcia doubled to left center with one out, took third on a foul out and then scored on a  single to left field by Levanti.

Graduate student righty Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) earned his fifth win of the season after striking out seven batters over seven innings, while yielding just one run on three hits. In addition to Charbonneau's three hits, Donato DiNorcia, Levanti and David DiNorcia each recorded two of Le Moyne's 13 hits. Kellen Croce took the loss after giving up eight runs (six earned) on eight hits over four innings on the mound.

In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored a pair of runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning. After Swetman tripled down the right field line to lead off the frame, sophomore left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) lined home run over the fence in the right field corner for his second home run of the season.

Le Moyne pushed its lead to 3-0 in the third as freshman first baseman/designated hitter Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) launched his team-best sixth home run of the season, the most by a freshman in the Northeast-10, over the center field fence. With the blast, Place extended his consecutive games streak of safely reaching base to 24 games, the longest by a Dolphin since the 2010 season when Zach Wiley '12 registered a 42-game streak.

New Haven rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth inning, but left the tying run stranded at third base. Designated hitter Robert Petrillo and third baseman Jack Zagaja drew back-to-back six-pitch walks to start the inning and force a Le Moyne pitching change. Riccio greeted Swetman with a single up the middle to drive in Petrillo. After a sacrifice bunt by Garcia, Tammaro grounded out to knock in Zagaja and move pinch-runner James Myers to third. Swetman then struck out center fielder Joe Caico swinging to end the game.

Freshman righty Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill), who retired 20 batters before allowing his first hit, earned his sixth win of the season, the most by a freshman in the Northeast-10, after striking out seven over eight-plus innings. West and Swetman each had two of Le Moyne's seven hits in the game. With a single in the third inning, West extended his consecutive games streak with a hit to 12 games, the longest by a Dolphin since the 2012 season when Brett Botsford '12 recorded streaks of 19 games and 15 games and current assistant coach Matt Marra '12 posted a 13-game streak. David Palmer suffered the loss after giving up three runs on five hits over five innings.

Le Moyne (24-14, 12-6 NE-10, 7-6 SW) returns to action on Tuesday at The College of Saint Rose at 3:30 p.m. The game will decide the baseball point in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions. A Le Moyne victory gives the Dolphins the trophy outright for the second time in four years, while a Saint Rose victory pulls the Golden Knights within 8-7 with only the outdoor track point remaining.
