40 STUDENT-ATHLETES HONORED FOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AT
ANNUAL SCHOLAR-ATHLETE BREAKFAST
Syracuse, NY -On the morning of Wednesday, April 8th, 40
student-athletes were recognized for their achievement and success
in the classroom.
During the fall semester, Le Moyne College student-athletes once
again excelled in the classroom. Last semester, 299
student-athletes' average semester GPA was 3.09, boosting the
department's cumulative GPA to 3.05. Of the 16 athletic teams
at Le Moyne, 12 earned a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher, with
59 % of all student-athletes reaching the 3.0 mark this
fall.
The second annual Scholar-Athlete Recognition Breakfast event
recognizes the academic achievements of sophomore, junior, senior
and gradate-level student-athletes who have cumulative GPA of 3.5
or greater. In 2008, 33 student-athletes where honored and shared
the morning breakfast with a faculty member or academic
administrator who was recognized as playing a significant role in
their academic success. The Scholar-Athlete Recognition Ceremony is
supported by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Office
of Academic Affairs.
The men's swimming & diving team earned the top honor this
semester with a team GPA of 3.34. Women's soccer was next in line
with a 3.33 semester GPA.
Since the 2003-04 academic year, Le Moyne student-athletes have had
11 consecutive semesters with an average team cumulative GPA of 3.0
or higher. Additionally, the team semester GPA has been 3.0 or
higher 10 of the last 11 semesters. This semester, fall 2008, marks
both the highest average team semester and cumulative GPA our
student-athletes have achieved since 2003.
From the President:
We are all – faculty, coaches, administrators, and staff
– so proud to be a part of supporting and challenging you
during this time of your life. You are performing in an outstanding
capacity at your sport, while also maintaining a high level of
scholastic proficiency at a Jesuit college that prides itself on
rigor and excellence. This is a remarkable and admirable
achievement, indeed.
In some ways, you may not even realize yet just how significant
your abilities even are. People with your unique combination of
intelligence, commitment and athletic training are needed now more
than ever in our contemporary American society. Sports have become
an important unifying force; they also help in the development of
communication and teamwork skills and they can impart a lifelong
love of fitness and recreation. They help people to develop loyalty
and community, to gather together in the spirit of friendly
competition and to have fun! After your experiences here at Le
Moyne, you will be more likely to actively participate in sports
throughout your life, passing along your love to your own children
and communities. Each one of you has developed your potential as a
leader and role model here at Le Moyne, skills you will carry into
the world and use to make a difference well beyond your years here
with us. You truly embody the ideals of our symbol, the Dolphin:
grace, swiftness and a desire for knowledge. I wish you continued
success and I am proud to have you represent us both on the field
of play, and well beyond it.
Fred P. Pestello, Ph.D.
President
Dear Students and Colleagues,
In athletics, success can be measured in many ways, wins-losses,
individual statistics or sportsmanship. As scholar-athletes you add
to this list the great success you have achieved in the classroom
to match your athletic prowess. This morning allows us to
acknowledge your hard work from the academic part of your lives. We
are particularly proud of your accomplishments given all the
demands placed on student-athletes.
Let us not forget all the people who have supported your activities
both in the classroom and labs and on the field or on the court.
Through the sacrifice of many you have had a great opportunity set
before you. The bar has been set high and you have exceeded it. One
of those people is with you today and so we have a chance to say
thanks for the support. Continue to strive toward excellence in
everything you do.
Sincerely,
Shawn L. Ward, Ph.D.
