CHAMPIONS IN THE CLASSROOM: 42 STUDENT-ATHLETES HONORED FOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AT 4TH ANNUAL SCHOLAR-ATHLETE BREAKFAST
SYRACUSE, NY – Forty-two Le Moyne College student-athletes were honored on Thursday morning for their academic achievement at the 4th annual Scholar-Athlete Breakfast.
Le Moyne College President Dr. Fred Pestello praised the student-athletes for their commitment to their studies and ability to manage their busy schedule to provide a positive reflection of Le Moyne College.
Stephen Helmer ’79, a member of the Le Moyne College Boards of Trustess, provided the Keynote Address of the morning. Helmer spoke of his experiences as a student-athlete at Le Moyne and praised the honored student-athletes for their efforts in striking the right balance between academics and athletics.
The fourth annual Scholar-Athlete Recognition Breakfast event recognizes the academic achievements of sophomore, junior, senior and graduate-level student- athletes who have cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater. In 2010, 45 student-athletes where honored and shared the morning breakfast with a faculty member or academic administrator who was recognized as playing a significant role in their academic success. The Scholar-Athlete Recognition Ceremony is supported by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Office of Academic Affairs.
During the fall 2010 semester, 301 student-athletes' average semester GPA was 3.12, boosting the cumulative GPA to 3.11. Of the 17 athletic teams at Le Moyne, 12 earned a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher with 59% (177) of all student-athletes reaching the 3.0 mark this fall. The women’s golf team earned the top honor for the semester with a team GPA of 3.42, with men’s tennis next with a 3.38 semester GPA.
Since the 2003-04 academic year, Le Moyne student-athletes have
had 15 consecutive semesters with an average team cumulative GPA of
3.0 or higher.
