MANHATTAN USES TWO COMPLETE GAMES TO SWEEP DOLPHINS 4-1
& 4-2.
FAIRFIELD, CT – Manhattan used two complete game efforts on
the mound by Tom Costigan and Dan Forman to sweep the Dolphins in a
doubleheader at Fairfield University’s Alumni Diamond. The
Dolphins drop to 9-14 while Manhattan improves to 9-11-1 on the
year.
Despite eight strong innings by junior Eric Beaulac, the Jaspers
pushed across two early runs on a pair Dolphins fielding mishaps to
take the early lead. Sophomore Chris Edmondson led off the fifth
inning with blast over the right field fence for the Dolphins lone
run of the game. The Jaspers would tack on insurance runs in the
eighth and ninth for the 4-1 victory. The game was marked by
outstanding starting pitching by both clubs. Manhattan’s
Costigan allowed only four hits and one earned run as he struck out
six. Beaulac matched Costigan pitch-for-pitch as the right-hander
allowed only three hits and struck out 11 on the afternoon.
Manhattan’s Kevin Nieto collected three hits and scored two
runs in leading the Jaspers to a 4-2 seven-inning victory over the
Dolphins in game two. The Dolphins’ bats would spark early
with a first inning RBI single by Matt Nandin and a string of
two-out hits in the third inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The
Jaspers would scratch for two in the bottom of the fourth on a
bases-loaded walk and a fielding error. Nieto pushed across the
game winning RBI in the bottom of the fifth on his second double of
the game. Manhattan was once again led by a strong pitching
performance as Dan Forman went the distance for the Jaspers,
allowing six hits and one earned run, while striking out five.
Le Moyne returns to action on Tuesday, April 1st as they host St.
Bonaventure at 1:00 PM at Dick Rockwell Field.
