BSB: INDIANA TOPS DOLPHINS, 8-3, IN FINAL GAME OF EAGLE
INVITATIONAL
Statesboro, Ga. - Blake Monar struck out six batters over seven
innings, while allowing just one run, to lead Indiana to an 8-3 win
over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Sunday in the fifth game
of the Holiday Inn Eagle Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern at
J.I. Clements Stadium.
Monar, a freshman left-hander that was drafted in the 26th round
of the 2008 MLB Draft by the Yankees, allowed just four hits and a
single run in the fifth inning to pick up his second victory of the
season. Offensively, Jerrud Sabourin led the Hoosiers with four
hits and an RBI, while junior Josh Phegley connected on a three-run
home run. The left side of the infield drove in all three Le Moyne
runs as senior shortstop Matt Nandin (North Syracuse,
N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) recorded a hit and a pair of
RBI and sophomore Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central
Square) blasted his third home run of the year.
The Hoosiers opened the scoring in the first inning with a run on
one hit. Evan Crawford led off the contest with a single to right
center and then stole second base. After a groundout moved him to
third, Crawford scored on a groundout by Alex Dickerson.
After a scoreless second inning, Crawford doubled down the left
field line with one out and Sabourin followed with a single to left
field. Phegley, tabbed a preseason All-American and as the top
catcher in the nation by the NCBWA, Louisville
Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Baseball
America, then smacked his first home run of the season to
right center.
The Dolphins got one run back in the bottom of the fifth inning on
a pair of hits. Freshman second baseman Ryan Mahoney (Clay,
N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) opened the frame with a single
to left field and moved to second on a wild pitch. After sophomore
first baseman Don Schaaf (Middle Island,
N.Y./Longwood) singled to first base, Nandin lifted a
sacrifice fly to center field to plate Mahoney.
Indiana (4-6) tacked on four runs on just two hits in the eighth
inning. Following a line out to open the frame, the Hoosiers loaded
the bases on a pair of walks and an error. Rogers then scored on a
wild pitch before Jake Dunning singled through the right side to
plate Vince Gonzalez. After a Le Moyne pitching change, Crawford
recorded a sacrifice fly to knock in Dylan Swift and Sabourin
capped Indiana's scoring with a single through the right side to
drive in Dunning.
Le Moyne tallied two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but
could not cut into its deficit any further before the final out was
recorded. Marra led off the frame with a solo homer to left center
on a 2-2 pitch. Pinch hitters Joe Lombardi (Briarcliff
Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) and Brett Botsford
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) each singled to keep the
inning going. Following a strikeout, Nandin reached on a fielder's
choice to plate Lombardi before moving to third on an infield
single by pinch hitter Dan Sisto (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian
Brothers Academy). Freshman reliever Wyatt Hoff induced a
fly out to right field to close out the game.
Le Moyne (2-6) returns to action on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at #3
nationally-ranked Georgia, last season's World Series
runner-up.
