BSB: TROY POUNDS OUT 13 HITS EN ROUTE TO 10-3 WIN OVER LE
MOYNE
Troy, Ala. - Ryan Ditthardt went 4-for-4 with two runs batted in
and three runs scored to lead Troy University to a 10-3 win over
the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday at Riddle-Pace
Field.
The Trojans opened the scoring with a run in the second inning and
two in the third. Following a pair of outs in the second, Blake
Martz smacked a solo home run to right field. The Trojans used
another two-out rally in the third inning to score twice. Michael
Precise walked and Ditthardt followed with a double do the right
field line. Brett Henry then plated Precise and Ditthardt with a
double to right center.
Le Moyne cut into its deficit with a run in the top of the fourth
inning. Junior leftfielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City,
N.Y./Johnson City) opened the frame with a single to
shortstop. Two batters later, junior centerfielder Sean
Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) replaced
Edmondson on the base paths when he grounded into a fielder's
choice. Sophomore third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton,
N.Y./Central Square) followed with a single to right field
and advanced all the way to third on a fielding error, allowing
Paino to score from first base.
The Trojans pushed their lead back out to three runs with a run in
the bottom of the fifth, but Le Moyne pulled to within one with two
runs in the sixth inning. J.R. Myers was hit by a pitch to open the
sixth and Precise followed with a single to left center to move
Myers to third. Ditthardt then laced his second double of the
contest down the right field line to know in Myers. Following a
rain delay, senior right hander Brandon Otto (Cicero,
N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) came out of the bullpen to
induce a pair of ground outs and strike out a batter around an
intentional walk that loaded the bases. The Dolphins loaded the
bases in the sixth inning on a walk and two hit batsman around a
wild pitch and a passed ball. After the second pitching change of
the inning by the Trojans, senior second baseman Chris
Murphy (Laurel Hollows, N.Y./St. Dominic's) reached on a
fielder's choice to the shortstop that plated Paino from third,
while Marra scored from second on a throwing error by the
shortstop.
The Trojans broke the game open with three runs in each of the
seventh and eighth innings. Chad Watson plated Ditthardt with a
single to left field in the seventh, while Martz knocked in Watson
and Brett Henry with a single through the left side. In the eighth,
Troy used four consecutive doubles by Myers, Precise, Ditthardt and
Henry to cap the game's scoring.
Sophomore southpaw Cory Nelson (Manlius,
N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) suffered the loss for the
Dolphins, yielding four runs on five hits over four innings, while
striking out four batters. Edmondson and Marra each registered two
hits in the game for the Dolphins, while Paino scored twice.
Freshman Tyler Ray picked up his second win of the season, allowing
just an unearned run on five hits over five innings.
