BSB: DOLPHINS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER AT STONY BROOK, WIN 10-7, LOSE
8-3
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior catcher Rich Brown (Vestal,
N.Y./Vestal) went 4-for-4 with four runs batted in and two
runs scored to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a
doubleheader split with Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon at
University Field. Stony Brook won the opener 8-3, while the
Dolphins took the second game by a 10-7 score.
Le Moyne opened the nightcap with seven runs, including five
unearned, on six hits in the first inning. Freshman second baseman
Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker),
senior shortstop Matt Nandin (North Syracuse,
N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and senior first baseman
Chris Haynes (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius)
loaded the bases with consecutive singles. Junior leftfielder
Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City)
followed with a single through the right side to plate Botsford.
Sophomore third baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central
Square) then reached on a fielding error, allowing Nandin
to score. After freshman Dan Sisto (Liverpool,
N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) reached on a fielder's
choice to knock in Haynes, junior centerfielder Sean Paino
(Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) drove in Edmondson
with an infield single. Following a strikeout, Brown blasted a
three-run homer to center field.
The Dolphins tacked on a single run in the bottom of the third
inning before the Seawolves recorded seven runs over their third
and fourth at-bats. Brown gave the Dolphins an 8-0 lead with a
double to right field to drive in sophomore Don Schaaf
(Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) from first base.
Stony Brook posted two runs on three hits in the third and five
runs and five hits in the fourth. Chad Marshall singled up the
middle with one out in the third to drive in Chris Maier from
second base, while Brian Witkowski scored from second base as
Michael Stephan reached on a fielding error. In the fourth inning,
the Seawolves loaded the bases with the consecutive singles with
two outs. Witkowski then cleared the bases with a grand slam to
right center and Marshall followed with a solo blast to right
field.
The Dolphins expanded their lead with a pair of runs in the sixth
inning. Paino walked and Brown singled around a sac bunt by Schaaf
to knock Stony Brook starter Evan Stecko-Haley out of the game.
Botsford followed with a run-scoring groundout and Nandin singled
through the left side to plate Brown for a 10-7 lead.
Junior southpaw Tom McDermott (Amsterdam,
N.Y./Amsterdam) picked up his first win of the season by
tossing five scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Nandin posted
three hits to join Brown with multiple hits. Stecko-Haley took loss
after giving up 10 runs (five earned) in five and one-third innings
pitched.
In the opener, the Dolphins plated two runs in the first inning.
Botsford led off the game with a double to left center. After a
groundout moved him to third, Haynes recorded a sac fly to right
field to knock in Botsford. Edmondson followed by walking and then
stealing second base. Marra then singled to left center to drive in
Edmondson.
The Seawolves answered back with a run in the bottom of the first
and three runs in the second. Stephan singled up the middle to
score Pat Cantwell to get Stony Brook on the board. In the second,
Jeremy Nowak doubled to right field to open the frame and came
around to score on a bunt single by Keith Fier. Chad Rebecca, who
reached on an error after Nowak's double, and Fier put the
Seawolves ahead 4-2 as they scored unearned runs on a Le Moyne
error.
Stony Brook tacked on a run in the fifth and three runs in the
sixth to take an 8-2 lead. Michael Tansey, who reached on a leadoff
single to center, moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt and
scored as Rob Dyer fouled out to right field. Cantwell knocked in
Intagliata with a single through the right side After a single by
Nick Thode, Cantwell scored from second on a throwing error by
Brandon Otto (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse).
Tansey capped the game's scoring by plating Thode with a double to
left field.
Sophomore Cory Nelson (Manlius,
N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) suffered the loss after
allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits over five innings,
while striking out five batters. Botsford and Marra each recorded
two hits in the contest. Matt Harloff picked up the win after
giving up one run in three and two-thirds innings pitched.
Le Moyne (4-13) returns to action with a three-game series at IPFW
beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28 at 12:00
p.m.
