BSB: DOLPHINS SWEEP IPFW, 3-1 AND 3-2, IN NON-CONFERENCE
DOUBLEHEADER
Fort Wayne, Ind. - Senior shortstop Matt Nandin (North
Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) went 4-for-7 to lead
the Le Moyne College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of IPFW
on Saturday afternoon at Mastodon Field. The Dolphins took the
opener 3-1 in 12 innings, while downing the Mastodons 3-2 in the
seven-inning nightcap.
The Mastodons got on the scoreboard in the first inning of game
one with the only run they would score in the game. Joel Washko
singled to left field with one out and stole second following a
strikeout. Shaun VanDriessche then doubled to left field to drive
in Washko.
Following three scoreless innings, the Dolphins evened the score
in the fifth with a run on two hits. Sophomore right-fielder
Don Schaaf (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) was hit
by a pitch with one out and freshman second baseman Brett
Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) followed with a
single down the left field line. After Schaaf was picked off second
base and Nandin walked, junior left fielder Chris Edmondson
(Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) doubled down the right
field line to knock in Botsford with the game-tying run.
The two squads went scoreless over the next six innings until the
Dolphins were able to plate the winning run. Senior catcher
Chris Haynes (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius)
opened the top of the 12th inning with a single to left field and
then stole second base. Sophomore third baseman Matt Marra
(Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) followed with a double to
left center to give Le Moyne a 2-1 advantage. Junior centerfielder
Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham)
gave the Dolphins an insurance run by plating Marra with a double
to the left field line.
Junior southpaw Tom McDermott (Amsterdam,
N.Y./Amsterdam) struck out the final three batters of the
game to nail down his third win of the season. McDermott struck out
10 batters over five and two-thirds innings in relief of sophomore
starter Jeff Tardiff (Framingham,
N.Y./Framingham). Tardiff tossed six and one-third
innings, yielding just the first inning run on six hits, while
striking out five batters.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins jumped on the board with the only
three runs they would need. Botsford was hit by a pitch to lead off
the contest. Following a strikeout, Nandin doubled to right field
to advance Botsford to third. Botsford then scored and Nandin moved
to third on a passed ball. After Edmondson was intentionally walked
and then stole second, Haynes singled to drive in Nandin and
Edmondson.
The Mastodons recorded singe runs in the bottom of the first and
sixth innings, but could not plate the tying run. In the first,
Jordan Kohler walked and stole second with one out. Following a
strikeout, VanDriessche singled to left field to knock in Kohler.
In the sixth, Kohler led off with a double to left field and moved
to third on a single by Chris Gottschal. Kohler then scored on a
failed pickoff attempt at first base by the Dolphins.
Junior lefty Luke Nellis (Fonda,
N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) picked up his first win of the
season by tossing six and two-thirds innings, while allowing just
two runs (one earned) and striking out seven batters. Freshman
Derek Zielinski (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie) earned
his first save by inducing a groundout with runners at first and
second base in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Le Moyne (6-13), which has won three straight games, closes out
its three-game series at IPFW with a 12:00 p.m. start on Sunday
against the Mastodons.
