BSB: IPFW THWARTS LE MOYNE RALLY WITH NINTH-INNING RUN FOR 12-11
VICTORY
Fort Wayne, Ind. - Chris Gottschal singled to right center with two
outs in the ninth inning to drive in the game-winning run as IPFW
edged Le Moyne College in a non-conference baseball match-up on
Sunday afternoon at Mastodon Field.
The Mastodons opened an 8-1 lead through three innings with a pair
of runs in the first inning and six runs in the third frame. Joel
Washko led off the game by drawing a walk and moved to second on a
wild pitch. After a pair of outs and a walk to Shaun VanDriessche,
Mark Carden singled to right field to plate Washko and advanced to
second on an error. Jordan Kohler then drew a walk to load the
bases before Devin Taylor was hit by a pitch to force in
VanDriessche.
The Dolphins were able to get one run back in the second inning on
a solo home run to right center by junior Rich Brown
(Vestal, N.Y./Vestal). IPFW extended its lead with six
runs on two hits and four errors in the third inning. The Mastodons
loaded the bases on a lead-off double by Gottschal, a walk to
VanDriessche and a single by Carden. Following a strikeout, Taylor
grounded into a fielder's choice, but Carden was safe at second on
an error, allowing Gottschal and VanDriessche to score. One batter
later, Carden scored on a groundout by Quentin Brown. Following Le
Moyne's second pitching change of the game and a walk, Washko
reached on an error to allow Taylor to score. Washko then stole
second and J.J. Short was able to score from third on an error. The
Mastodons capped the scoring in the inning as Scott Micinski
reached on an error that allowed Washko to score from second.
Le Moyne cut into its deficit with a pair of runs in the fifth
inning. With one out, freshman Brett Botsford
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and seniors Chris
Haynes (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and
Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North
Syracuse) registered consecutive doubles as Botsford and
Haynes crossed home plate.
IPFW added to its lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Taylor walked and Brown singled to open the inning. After another
Le Moyne pitching change, Short laid down a successful sacrifice
bunt to move each runner up a base. Washko was then intentionally
walked to load the bases. Following a strike out, Gottschal doubled
to center field to knock in Taylor, Brown and Washko.
The Dolphins pulled to within 11-4 with a run on two hits in the
sixth inning. Le Moyne loaded the bases with two outs on as
Don Schaaf (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) singled,
Botsford was walked and Haynes was hit by a pitch. Nandin then
singled to left field to plate Schaaf.
Le Moyne rallied to tie the game with seven runs over its final two
at-bats. Haynes and Nandin recorded back-to-back singles with two
outs in the eighth. Junior leftfielder Chris Edmondson
(Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) then drilled his third
home run of the season over the fence in right center to bring the
Dolphins within 11-7. In the ninth inning, junior Sean
Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) reached on an
error and advanced to second on the throw to open the frame. After
Brown was hit by a pitch, freshman pinch-hitter Dan Sisto
(Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) singled to
right field to drive in Paino. Following IPFW's fourth pitching
change of the contest, Schaaf walked to load the bases. Botsford
followed with a groundout to first base to knock in Brown. Haynes
then delivered his third double of the game to score Sisto and
Schaaf with the game-tying run. After another pitching change by
the Mastodons and a fly out, Edmondson was intentionally walked and
sophomore Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central
Square) was hit by a pitch to put a runner at each base.
Josh Shatto was able to end the inning with a strikeout.
In the ninth inning, Washko and Jason Doerffler each drew walks
with two outs. Gottschal then ended the game with his single to
right center for his fourth RBI of the contest.
Shatto picked up his second win of the season by retiring two of
the four batters he faced. Senior Brandon Otto (Cicero,
N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) suffered the loss, yielding
one run on three hits over one and two-thirds innings, while
striking out four batters.
Le Moyne (6-14), which had its three-game win streak snapped,
returns to action on Tuesday, March 31 at Canisius at 3:00 p.m.
