BSB: DOLPHINS BLANK CANISIUS, 5-0, BEHIND FIVE SCORELESS INNINGS
FROM DEREK ZIELINSKI
Buffalo, N.Y. - Freshman righty Derek Zielinski
(Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie) tossed five shutout innings to
lead Le Moyne to a 5-0 win over Canisius in non-conference baseball
action on Tuesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.
Le Moyne jumped on the board with three runs in the first inning
without registering a hit. Freshman right fielder Brett
Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) opened the frame
by drawing a walk and then stole second base. After a ground out,
senior shortstop Matt Nandin (North Syracuse,
N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and junior left fielder
Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City)
drew back-to-back walks to lead the bases. Canisius starter Benson
Merritt was then called for a balk, allowing Nandin and Edmondson
to move up a base and Botsford to score. Merritt proceeded to throw
a wild pitch to allow Nandin to cross home plate. Sophomore third
baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central
Square) followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to
plate Edmondson from third for the inning's final run.
Following a scoreless second inning, the Dolphins added a run on a
pair of hits in the third. Edmondson singled up the middle with one
out and then stole second base. Marra connected for a single up the
middle of his own to drive in Edmondson for the second time in the
game.
Le Moyne capped the contest's scoring with a run on three hits in
the eighth inning. Senior catcher Chris Haynes (Manlius,
N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and Nandin each singled with
one out. Edmondson followed with a single through the right side to
knock in Haynes from second.
Zielinski, making the third start of his career, limited the Golden
Griffs to just one hit over the opening five innings of the game,
while striking out four batters to earn his second win of the
season. Sophomore southpaw Cory Nelson (Manlius,
N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) pitched two innings, allowing
just one hit, while fellow sophomore lefty Tom McDermott
(Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam) closed out the game with two
scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
Le Moyne (7-14), which has won four of its last five games, returns
to action for a three-game series at Wright State. First pitch is
slated for 6:30 p.m. on Friday night.
