BSB: DOLPHINS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER AT WRIGHT STATE, WINNING 8-1, FALLING 12-2

Dayton, Ohio - Sophomore right-hander Jeff Tardiff (Framingham, N.Y./Framingham) struck out two batters over eight innings to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to an 8-1 victory in the opener of a doubleheader at Wright State on Saturday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium. The Raiders won the nightcap, 12-2.

Le Moyne tallied a pair of runs in the second inning of game one on three hits. Senior catcher Chris Haynes (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) led off the frame with a double to right field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Junior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) then singled to center field to drive in Haynes. Following a groundout, freshman designated hitter Matthew Ciraco (White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) doubled down the left field line to knock in Paino from second.

The Dolphins tacked on single runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Freshman right fielder Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) opened the fifth with a double to left field and advanced to third on a sac bunt. Junior left fielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) followed with a single up the middle to plate Botsford. In the sixth, junior first baseman Rich Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) singled through the left side with one away. After Ciraco reached on an error, Botsford singled through the right side to drive in Brown.

Le Moyne added three runs in the seventh inning before the Raiders could break through with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Senior shortstop Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and Haynes each doubled to lead off the inning. After a fly out and Paino was hit by a pitch, Brown reached on an error to knock in Haynes. Following a stolen base by Paino, Ciraco reached on a fielder's choice to plate Paino. Wright State scored in its half of the seventh as Kory Twede doubled to left center to drive in Garrett Gray, who reached on a single to right. Edmondson capped the game's scoring with a solo home run to right center to lead off the eighth.

Tardiff, who registered the longest start of his career, improved to 2-2 on the season by allowing eight hits, while yielding just a single run. Nandin and Haynes each recorded three hits, while Botsford, Edmondson and Paino had two hits apiece.

In the nightcap, the Raiders scored seven runs over the first four innings of the game. Wright State loaded the bases to open the first with a pair of singles and a hit batsman. Casey McGrew then drew a walk to force in Ryan Ashe. After R.J. Gundolff scored on a balk, Quentin Cate was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. Tristan Moore capped the inning's scoring by grounding out to plate Jeff Mercer.

In the third inning, the Raiders plated three runs on two hits and three Le Moyne errors. McGrew opened the inning by reaching on error and Cate followed with a walk. On a bunt single by Moore, McGrew scored from second on a throwing error. Gray then followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to drive home Cate. After a sac bunt, Twede singled up the middle and advanced to second on a throwing error, allowing Moore to score from third. Wright State posted a single run in the fourth on a hit. Gundolff led off the frame with a double down the left field line, stole third and scored on a passed ball.

Wright State extended its lead with four runs on three hits in the seventh inning. Aaron Fields singled, Twede walked and Ashe was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gundolff walked and Mercer followed with a single to each drive in a run. The Raiders tacked on their 10th run as McGrew grounded into a double play, while they closed out the inning as Cate singled to drive in Gundolff.

Le Moyne got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning with a pair of runs on four hits. Botsford, senior second baseman Chris Murphy (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./St. Dominic's) and Edmondson all singled to right field to load the bases. Nandin followed with a single to center to knock in Botsford. Haynes then reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Murphy.

The Raiders capped the afternoon's scoring with a run on three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning. Gray led off the frame with a triple to right and scored one batter later on a balk.

Junior southpaw Luke Nellis (Fonda, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville) suffered the loss by allowing seven runs (four earned) on five hits over three and two-thirds innings. Botsford posted four hits in the contest, while Murphy and Nandin each recorded two.
