BSB: WRIGHT STATE EDGES LE MOYNE, 8-6, IN SERIES
FINALE
Dayton, Ohio - Rylan Ostrosky allowed just one run on four hits
over six innings to lead Wright State to an 8-6 win over Le Moyne
College in non-conference baseball action on Sunday morning at
Nischwitz Stadium.
The Raiders jumped out to a 5-0 lead on the Dolphins in the opening
four innings of the game. With one out in the first, R.J. Gundolff
singled down the left field line. Jeff Mercer followed with a
triple down the left field line to drive in Gundolff. In the third
inning, the Raiders plated a pair of runs on two hits. Mercer drew
a two-out walk and scored on a double to right field by Casey
McGrew. Quentin Cate followed with a single to knock in McGrew, but
was thrown out trying to move to second to end the inning.
Wright State went ahead 5-0 with two runs on three hits and an
error in the fourth. Garrett Gray opened the inning with a double
to left center. On Kory Twede's sacrifice bunt attempt, the ball
was thrown away to allow Gray to score. Following a ground out, a
single and a Le Moyne pitching change, Ryan Ashe registered a bunt
single to drive in Twede.
The Dolphins broke through with single runs in the sixth and
seventh innings. Freshman right fielder Brett Botsford
(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled through the right
side and senior second baseman Chris Murphy (Laurel Hollow,
N.Y./St. Dominic's) reached on a fielding error to open
the fifth. After a wild pitch moved each runner up a base, junior
left fielder Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson
City) singled through the right side to plate Botsford. In
the seventh, junior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger
Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and classmate Rich
Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) each singled to right field
with one out. Freshman designated hitter Matthew Ciraco
(White Plains, N.Y./Perkiomen School) laid a bunt single
down the first base line to drive in Paino.
The Raiders answered back with two runs in the seventh and a run in
the eighth to extend their lead. Ashe walked and Mercer singled
around a foul out to begin the seventh. McGrew then reached on a
fielder's choice to knock in Ashe from second base. Following a Le
Moyne pitching change and a hit batsman, Cate stole second and
McGrew scored by stealing home. In the eighth, Twede walked and
moved to second on a sac bunt. Twede then came around to score as
Gerald Ogrinc reached on a fielding error.
The Dolphins rallied for four runs on five hits in the ninth
inning, but were unable to tally the equalizer. Sophomore third
baseman Matt Marra (Brewerton, N.Y./Central
Square) and Paino doubled to open the frame. Brown then
grounded out to shortstop to plate Marra. Ciraco picked up his
second RBI of the afternoon with a single down the left field line
to drive in Paino. After a single by Botsford, an out and a walk to
Edmondson, senior shortstop Matt Nandin (North Syracuse,
N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) singled to right field to
knock in Ciraco and Murphy. Michael Schum was able to induce a
groundout to end the game.
Sophomore southpaw Tom McDermott (Amsterdam,
N.Y./Amsterdam) suffered his first loss of the season,
allowing five runs (four earned) in three and one-third innings
pitched. Botsford, Nandin, Marra, Paino and Ciraco each recorded
two hits in the contest.
Le Moyne (8-16) returns to action on Tuesday at St. Bonaventure for
a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
