BSB: HAYNES' THREE HITS NOT ENOUGH AS
CORNELL EDGES ‘PHINS 7-5.
SYRACUSE, NY - Three hits and two runs batted in by junior
catcher Chris Haynes (Manlius, NY /
Fayetteville-Manlius) was not enough as the Cornell Big
Red edged the Dolphins 7-5 on Tuesday at Dick Rockwell Field. The
win pushes Cornell to 9-17 while the loss drops Le Moyne to
10-17.
Both teams posted one run in the opening frame. Cornell used a
Dolphin error to start a two-out rally and plated the game's first
run on an RBI single to centerfield from Mickey Brodsky.
Le Moyne counter-punched in the bottom half of the inning as
pre-season All-American Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, NY /
Johnson City) connected for his sixth double of the season
and scored on an RBI single by Haynes.
The Big Red regained the lead in the top half of the third. After a
walk to Nathan Ford, Brodsky looped a ball to right field and moved
to third after a collision by two Dolphins, allowing Ford to score
from first. Cornell added one more run in the fifth inning as
Brandon Lee deposited freshman Derek Zielinski's
(Schenectady, NY / Colonie) first pitch of the inning over
the left field wall.
Haynes added a run scoring single in the bottom half of the inning
plating fellow senior Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, NY / CNS) to
trim the lead to 3-2. The Dolphins tied the game in their half of
the sixth and pinch hitter Dan Sisto (Liverpool, NY /
CBA) shot a ball through the right side to score
Matt Marra (Brewerton, NY / Central Square) and
knot the game at 3-3.
In the seventh, Cornell put three runs on the board highlighted by
Nathan Ford's two-run triple down the right field line and
Brodsky's RBI double into the left field gap.
Le Moyne once again rallied in the bottom of the eighth as
Rich Brown (Vestal, NY / Vestal) and Mara
connected for back-to-back home runs over the left field wall to
pull within one run at 6-5. Cornell's Stephen Osterer entered
the game and closed the door on the Dolphins with 1.2 innings of
scoreless relief to earn his first save of the season.
Le Moyne returns to action on Wednesday as they travel to face the
University at Buffalo at 4:00 p.m.
