BSB: TARDIFF PITCHES DOLPHINS TO 9-4 WIN OVER LONGWOOD
Syracuse, N.Y. - Sophomore pitcher Jeff Tardiff
(Framingham, N.Y./Framingham) struck out six batters in
registering his third complete game of the season in leading the Le
Moyne College baseball team to a 9-4 win over Longwood University
on Friday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field.
Le Moyne opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning on
junior left fielder Chris Edmondson's (Johnson City,
N.Y./Johnson City) team-best sixth home run of the
season.
The Lancers evened the score in the top of the fourth inning with a
run on two hits and two errors. Brant Jones opened the inning with
a single through the right side and advanced to second on a
fielding error. Phil Cerreto then reached on a bunt singled and
moved to second on a throwing error, allowing Jones to score from
second.
The Dolphins regained the lead with four runs on two hits and two
errors in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior shortstop
Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North
Syracuse) reach on an error, Edmondson singled through the
left side and senior catcher Chris Haynes (Manlius,
N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) walked to load the bases to
start the inning. Sophomore third baseman Matt Marra
(Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square) followed with a double
down the left field line to drive in Nandin and Edmondson. Junior
first baseman Rich Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal)
then flied out to left field to score Haynes, while junior center
fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C.
Ketcham) executed a suicide squeeze to plate Marra with
the final run of the inning.
Longwood cut into its deficit with single runs in the sixth and
seventh innings. Jones and Cerreto singled to open the sixth. After
Casey Havers reached on an error, Jonathan Quigley grounded into a
double play to drive in Jones. In the seventh, Robby Newman and
Matt Gwaltney opened the frame with singles and moved up a base on
a sacrifice bunt. Scott Kimble then grounded out to drive in
Newman.
Le Moyne got one run back in the bottom of the seventh and added
three runs in the eighth inning. Freshman designated hitter
Dan Sisto (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers
Academy) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a
sac bunt by classmate Matthew Ciraco (White Plains,
N.Y/Perkiomen School). Two batters later, Nandin doubled
down the left field line to drive in pinch-runner Don
Schaaf (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood HS). Marra led off
the eighth with a singled down the left field line and Brown
followed with a single to the third baseman. Following a sac bunt
by Paino, Schaaf doubled to left field to knock in Marra and Brown.
Following a pitching change and a stolen base by Schaaf, Ciraco
singled up the middle to plate Schaaf with Le Moyne's final
run.
The Lancers capped the game's scoring with a run on a hit and an
error in the ninth inning. Newman reached on a throwing error and
advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following a pair of outs,
Kimble tripled to left field to drive in Newman.
Tardiff, who lowered his earned run average to a team-best 3.43,
scattered 10 hits in allowing four runs (one earned) to earn his
fourth victory of the season. Edmondson, Marra and Brown each
recorded two hits in the contest. Chris Briere suffered the loss,
yielding nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits.
Le Moyne (12-17), which has won four of its last five returns,
resumes its four-game series with Longwood on Saturday with a
doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
