BSB: CANISIUS DOWNS LE MOYNE, 10-1, IN MID-WEEK BASEBALL
ACTION
Syracuse, N.Y. - Ian Choy and Branson Joseph each recorded three
hits to lead Canisius to a 10-1 victory over Le Moyne College in
non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Dick
Rockwell Field.
The Golden Griffs opened the game with a pair of runs in the first
inning. Connor Burke walked and Choy singled to right to lead off
the game. After a sac bunt and a groundout, Joseph doubled down the
right field line to plate Burke and Choy.
Canisius increased its lead to 5-0 with three runs on three hits
and two errors in the third inning. Choy led off the frame with a
double to left center. Following a pair of outs, Joseph singled up
the middle to drive in Choy for the second time in the contest.
Joseph then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error
by the catcher. After a walk to Brian Burton, Steve McQuail reached
on a throwing error by the third baseman to allow Joseph to cross
home plate. Alec Cabello then recorded an infield single to knock
in Burton with the inning's final run.
The Golden Griffs doubled their advantage with five runs on five
hits and an error in the top of the fourth inning. Burke opened the
frame by reaching on a catcher's interference and proceeded to
steal second base. Choy then laced his second double of the contest
down the left field line to knock in Burke from second. After a
groundout and a walk to Shayne Willson, Joseph drove in his fourth
and fifth runs of the game with a double to left center. After
Joseph was thrown out trying to steal third and Burton walked,
McQuail doubled to right field to drive in classmate Burton. After
a Le Moyne pitching change, McQuail scored the final run for his
team as Cabello singled down the third base line.
After three scoreless innings, the Dolphins broke through with one
run in the eighth inning on one hit. Senior first baseman
Chris Haynes (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius)
was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to third on a double down
the right field line by sophomore third baseman Matt Marra
(Brewerton, N.Y./Central Square). Junior center fielder
Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham)
then lifted a sacrifice fly to left center to drive in Haynes.
Benson Merritt pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just one
hit, with four strikeouts to record his first career victory.
Freshman lefty Mark Kuzma (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly)
suffered the loss after allowing 10 runs (five earned), while
striking out four, in three and two-thirds innings.
Le Moyne (15-19) returns to Dick Rockwell Field on Saturday at 1:00
p.m. for the start of a two-day, four-game series with Bryant
University.
