BSB: DOLPHINS POWER PAST NYIT, 12-10, IN SEASON
FINALE
Syracuse, N.Y. - Junior All-American designated hitter
Chris Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City)
homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the Le Moyne College
baseball team to a 12-10 win over New York Tech in Saturday
afternoon action at Dick Rockwell Field. For the twelfth
consecutive season, the Dolphins finished with a winning percentage
above .500.
Four players hit multiple home runs in a game that saw ten balls
leave the yard. Edmondson was the only Le Moyne player to homer
twice, connecting in the bottom of the first to give the Dolphins a
1-0 lead and again in the bottom of the fourth to provide breathing
room. Junior first baseman Rich Brown (Vestal,
N.Y./Vestal) put Le Moyne ahead for good in the bottom of
the third with a three-run shot to break a 4-4 tie. Brian Smith,
Effrey Valdez and George Carroll each hit a pair of solo homers for
NYIT.
After Edmondson homered in the bottom of the first, the Bears
scored two runs in the top of the second and third innings to take
a 4-1 lead. But Le Moyne's six-run third inning gave the Dolphins a
lead they wouldn't relinquish. Sophomore right fielder
Brett Botsford (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker)
plated senior second baseman Chris Murphy (Laurel Hollow,
N.Y./St. Dominic's) with an RBI double and later scored on
an error. After the Dolphins loaded the bases with one out in the
inning, junior center fielder Sean Paino (Wappinger Falls,
N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) drove in senior shortstop
Matt Nandin (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North
Syracuse) with a sacrifice fly. Brown followed with his
sixth homer of the season to give Le Moyne a 7-4 lead.
NYIT cut the Dolphins' lead to one with back-to-back homers in the
top of the fourth. Edmondson responded with his two-run shot in the
bottom half of the inning to restore a three-run lead at 9-6. The
Bears chipped away with a run in the top of the fifth before Le
Moyne tacked on its final three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Murphy drove in Paino and sophomore pinch hitter Don Schaaf
(Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) with a single before
Botsford brought the second baseman home with a triple to right
center.
The Bears scored once in the top of the seventh and twice in the
top of the eighth to produce the game's final score. Junior relief
pitchers Tom McDermott (Amsterdam, N.Y./Amsterdam)
and Luke Nellis (Fonda, N.Y./Fonda-Fultonville)
combined to close the door for the Dolphins. McDermott collected
his fifth win of the season while Nellis picked up his second save
of the campaign.
With 27 homers over the last two seasons, Edmondson set a
program-record for most home runs in a two-year stretch. The junior
All-American finished the season with 13 homers, 46 runs batted in
and a .644 slugging percentage.
Le Moyne (24-23) honored a five-member senior class of Murphy,
Nandin, Mike Brown (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal),
Chris Haynes (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius)
and Brandon Otto (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North
Syracuse) prior to the start of Saturday's game. The
Dolphins also recognized retiring assistant coach Bob Nandin, who
spent 13 years coaching at Le Moyne.
