Men's Golf: Le Moyne fifth, McCarthy ties for medalist honors at NCAA Regional

5/4/2005

JACKSON, N.J. – Le Moyne College sophomore Dan McCarthy (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) shot a four-over par 220 in his three rounds to tie for medalist honors at the 2005 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Northeast Regional at Pine Barrens Golf Club in Jackson, N.J. Making their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament, the Dolphins finished fifth in the region.

McCarthy, who led or shared the lead after all three rounds, fired rounds of 73, 72 and 75 to tie for the top spot with Bryant University’s Jim O’Connell (73-74-73) and St. Thomas Aquinas golfer Michael Tulacz (75-74-71).

For the 25th time in 27 NCAA appearances, Bryant University advanced to the NCAA Championship round with a regional title. The Bulldogs combined for a team total of +46, 910 (304-299-307) to outdistance host St. Thomas Aquinas (923, 308-305-310) by 13 strokes. Goldey Beacom (956, 314-321-321) was third and Post University (960, 326-319-315) was fourth. Le Moyne (968, 317-325-326) finished in a tie for fifth with Pace (968, 320-324-324). New Haven (973, 313-330-330) and Dowling (980, 332-320-328) rounded out the field.

Le Moyne senior Jim Vardaro (Albany, N.Y.) shot a 22-over par 238 (78-82-78) to finish in a tie for 17th. Alex McEneny (Syracuse, N.Y.) tied for 21st (78-80-83, 241)and Matt Mizeur (Clifton Park, N.Y.) finished in a tie for 40th (88-91-90, 269).

In a rule change enacted by the NCAA committee this season, McCarthy does not advance to the NCAA Division II Championship because only one golfer from the Super Regional (combined East and Northeast Regional) will make the tournament. Mike Hicks from West Liberty State fired a three-under 213 to win the East Regional and since his team did not win the title he will head to the national championship tournament as an individual.
