MEN’S GOLF: SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE CAPTURES TEAM CROWN,
BRYANT’S JIM O’CONNELL INDIVIDUAL MEDALIST AT 2005 ECAC
DIVISION II CHAMPIONSHIP
LIVERPOOL, N.Y. – Adam Goinsalvos shot an even-par 70 in the
final round to help Southern New Hampshire hold off St. Thomas
Aquinas for the team title at the ECAC Division II Golf
Championship at the Liverpool Golf & Public Country Club.
Bryant’s Jim O’Connell won individual medalist honors
by two strokes.
The four Southern New Hampshire scorers shot 78 or better on the
final day to hold off St. Thomas Aquinas. In recording their
winning total, the Penmen (295-298-593) were the only team to shoot
under 300 for each round. Runner-up St. Thomas Aquinas
(304-293-597) carded the top second round score with a 293, but
could not overcome the Penmen. Paced by O’Connell,
Northeast-10 Conference champion Bryant finished third.
Goldey-Beacom was fourth, followed by Pace, West Chester and
Post.
O’Connell fired an even-par round of 70 to follow up his
opening 71 to card a +1 score of 141 to win by two strokes. Patrick
Cibirka of St. Thomas Aquinas and Goldey-Beacom’s Michael
Tobiason tied with matching three-over rounds (71-72-143), but
Cibirka was declared the runner-up based on a better score over the
final nine holes. Goinsalvos and Post’s Calum Malcom and
Lloyd Notley tied for fourth at five-over. Pace’s Michael
Dominici was the only golfer to shoot a round under par. He shot a
one-under 69 on the second day to total 146 (+6).
Host Le Moyne rebounded for a 297 on the second and final day of
competition to finish in a tie for eighth. Freshman Brian Muench
topped Le Moyne’s quintet with an eighth-place finish. He
shot a two-day, seven-over par 147 (73-74).
The Dolphins tied with Dominican and New Haven in eighth. Saint
Michael’s was 11th, followed by Dowling, Saint
Anselm, Saint Rose, Bentley, Franklin Pierce and UMass Lowell tied
for 16th, Assumption and Wilmington tied for the
18th spot and Adelphi rounded out the 20-team
championship.
