LE MOYNE'S DAN MCCARTHY WINS MEDALIST HONORS, BUT DOLPHINS FINISH SECOND ON TIEBREAKER FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR AT NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
MARCELLUS, N.Y. - Le Moyne College senior Dan McCarthy (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) totaled a four-under par 104 to win the individual championship at the 2006 Northeast-10 Conference Championship hosted by Le Moyne at the Links at Sunset Ridge. Bentley won its second championship on a tiebreaker over Le Moyne. The tournament was shortened to 27 holes due to inclement weather on Sunday.
After teaming for a 304 after 18 holes on Saturday, Le Moyne carried a one-stroke lead into the final round, but for the second consecutive season the Dolphins were declared the runner-up on the conference tiebreaking procedure. Bentley and Le Moyne finished the 27-hole event with 454 strokes.
To earn its first championship since 1992, the Falcons (308-146-454) teamed for a 146 on Sunday's front nine and made up Le Moyne's four-stroke lead. Bentley's four Sunday counters combined for a two-over. Andy Burke and Brian Jassett matched even-par 36's and Brian Jasset and Matt Freedman registered one-over 37's. Burke (77-36-113) and Jasset (76-37-113) completed the tournament tied for ninth with a five-over 113. For his team's championship, Bentley head coach Don Moorhead was named the league's coach of the year.
Saint Anselm (305-154-459) completed the tournament third. Bryant (305-156-461), a 20-time team champion and three-time defending champions, finished in a three-way tie for fourth with Assumption (305-156-461) and Southern N.H. (308-153-461). Pace (325-154-479) was seventh followed by Saint Rose (315-165-480) and UMass Lowell (315-165-480), Saint Michael's (326-158-484) and Franklin Pierce (334-159-493).
McCarthy (69-35-104), the runner-up and conference freshman of the year in 2003, won his second tournament of the season by four strokes. After firing a three-under 69 on Saturday, he carried a one-stroke lead into the final round. His one-under 35 on Sunday was the only score under par. Pat Pelletier (70-38-108), the Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Year, finished second followed by Robert Younker (71-38-109) of Assumption. Saint Anselm's Sean Fitzpatrick (74-37-111), UMass Lowell's Tom Thiesing (75-36-111) and Saint Michael's Zach White (77-34-111) finished in a tie for fourth to join McCarthy, Pelletier and Younker on the first team all-conference squad.
Le Moyne freshman Tim Martins (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) finished seventh with Saint Anselm's Sean Mullane (75-37-112) a four-over 112 (76-36) to head the second team all-conference group. Burke and Jasset added individual honors to go with Bentley's team championship and Bryant's Mike Philipp (78-36-114) and Jason Taesher (74-40-114) were also named second team all-conference.
McCarthy is the fourth Le Moyne College golfer to capture the Gordon McCullough Memorial Award as the medalist at the conference tournament. Joe Tesori won the event last season, Neil Reidy was the medalist in 1998 and Brian Malchak was the champion in 1997.
