SURVIVE AND ADVANCE; BENTLEY EDGES LE MOYNE IN OVERTIME 67-64

WALTHAM, MASS. – The Le Moyne men’s basketball team nearly knocked off #1 Bentley and pushed the undefeated Falcons to overtime for the second time this season in the quarter final round of the NE-10 Tournament. A three-pointer at the buzzer by senior Jason Holmes pushed the game to overtime, but a late three-point play by Jason Westrol would propel Bentley to 67-64 victory.

The Falcons used seven first half 3-pointers on 18 attempts to build a 31-26 halftime advantage. Bentley’s Yusuf Abdul-Ali led the charge with 13 first half points on 5-of-7 shooting as the Falcones. Senior Jason Holmes added nine points and dished out three assists for the Dolphins to keep Le Moyne within striking distance.

On the back to strong inside play by sophomore Laurence Ekperigin and senior Dan Cromwell, along with timely baskets by Holmes, Le Moyne erased their halftime deficit and pulled within one point at 42-41 with 11:08 remaining. Back-to-back three pointers by Holmes and Jonathan Joshua gave the Dolphins their first lead of the second half at 49-48.

Le Moyne would extend their second half lead to as many as five on a three-pointer by Joshua to put the Dolphins up 54-49. The Falcons would respond to tie the game at 54-54 by Lew Finnegan’s jumper with 2:51 remaining.

A jumper by Jason Westrol and a three-pointer by Abdul-Ali pushed the Falcons up by five at 59-54 with just :20 to play. A late basket by Damani Corbin pulled the Dolphins within one possession at 59-56 with :10 remaining. Following a Joshua foul, Bentley’s Westrol missed the front end of a one-and-one and allowed the Dolphins one more opportunity to tie the game.

With :05 remaining, Jason Holmes tied the game with a three-pointer on a feed from Corbin at the buzzer to push the game to overtime.

In overtime, Le Moyne and Bentley traded baskets to open the extra period. A jumper by Finnegan would give the Falcons a one-point lead with 2:50 to play at 63-62. Dan Cromwell would answer with a lay-up to give the Dolphins a one point at 64-63 with just over one minute to play. A three-point play by Westrol gave the Falcons a two point advantage with :30 seconds remaining at 66-64. Le Moyne’s last gasps fell short and Bentley escaped with the 67-64 overtime victory.

Le Moyne had three players in double figures. Holmes led the way with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists. Dan Cromwell added 15 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks, Jonathan Joshua chipped in 14 points, including four 3-pointers. Yusuf Abdul-Ali would lead all scorers with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Westrol also added 20 points.

Le Moyne wraps up their season at 15-14, 12-10 in the conference play. Bentley moves on to the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Tournament to face the winner of the #5 Stonehill vs. #4 Pace match-up.
