MBB: PACE TOPS LE MOYNE, 80-76, IN NE-10 ACTION
New York, N.Y. - Freshman guard Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst,
N.Y./Lindenhurst) led five Dolphins in double-figures with
18 points, but the Le Moyne College men's basketball team lost an
80-76 Northeast-10 Conference match-up at Pace University on
Saturday afternoon at the Civic Center Gymnasium.
Following a 7-7 tie 3:10 into the first half, Pace scored 12 of the
game's next 16 points to take a 19-11 lead with 13:41 remaining.
Freshman Ryan Woods hit a three-pointer to open the streak, while
classmate Delroy Daley capped the span with five consecutive points
for the Setters. Johnson buried a pair of three-pointers around a
layup by junior forward Kevin Hassett (Phoenix,
Ariz./Desert Mountain/Iona College) to trim Pace's lead
down to two points. The Setters responded with eight consecutive
points on their next three possessions to extend their lead to 10
points.
After the Dolphins were able to close their deficit to four points
on a free throw by sophomore forward Kevin Roth
(Lake View,
N.Y./St. Francis), Pace tallied
10 consecutive points to open a team-best 14-point lead. Laurence
McGhee opened the streak with a conventional three-point play and
backcourt-mate Adrian Mills scored four points to cap run. Hassett
ended the span with a pair of free throws and Johnson drilled a
three-pointer and junior guard Damani Corbin (Brooklyn,
N.Y./Frederick Douglass) scored in the paint to close out
the half's scoring with the Setters ahead 47-38.
Pace scored nine of the second half's opening 10 points to build a
game-best 17 point lead. McGhee started the span with two free
throws, Daley followed with a pair of put-back layups and Woods
capped the streak with a three-pointer. The Dolphins responded with
a 20-8 run of their own to close the Pace lead to five points.
Hassett tallied six points in the run, junior forward
Laurence Ekperigin (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter
Panas) added four and Johnson and Roth closed the streak
with a three-pointer and layup, respectively.
The Setters pushed the lead back to ten points at 70-60 with 7:45
remaining, but the Dolphins registered a 12-4 run to pull within
one possession with 2:11 left in the contest. Corbin posted four of
the opening eight points of the span before Hassett drilled a
jumper to make it a 74-72 game. Mills answered with three
consecutive points to extend the lead to five points for Pace.
Justin Alston went 1-of-2 at the foul line and Woods hit a pair of
foul shots with four seconds remaining to close out the game.
Johnson connected on 6-of-12 from the three-point line to register
his third consecutive double-figure contest. Hassett tallied 12
points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Corbin also recorded 12
points. Ekperigin finished with 11 points and a game-high 12
rebounds, while senior Phil Barnes
(Georgetown, Cayman
Islands/Clinton C.C.) rounded out Le Moyne's five
double-figure scorers with a career-high 10 points off the bench.
Daley led the Setters with a game-best 20 points and registered
eight rebounds, while McGhee scored 17 points and dished out nine
assists, Mills added 14 points and Woods posted 13 points.
Le Moyne (2-5, NE-10 2-4), which has dropped four consecutive
games, returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 13 against St. Michael's
at 3:00 p.m.
