MBB: DOLPHINS TOP GOLDEY-BEACOM, 72-56, FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN


Wilmington, Del. - Junior forward Laurence Ekperigin (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) recorded his fourth consecutive double-double to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 72-56 non-conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College at the Joseph West Jones Center on Sunday afternoon.

Ekperigin, the reigning Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week, scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) hit four three-pointers en route to scoring 18 points in 27 minutes off the bench. Junior guard Damani Corbin (Brooklyn, N.Y./Frederick Douglass) joined Ekperigin and Johnson in double-digits by tallying 10 points, while also dishing off four assists. Anthony Parham led the Lightning with 15 points.

The Lightning jumped out to an 11-4 lead just over five minutes into the contest behind five points from Parham. Ekperigin converted a conventional three-point play to ignite a 16-2 run by the Dolphins. Following a pair of foul shots by Steve Cooper put Goldey-Beacom ahead 13-7, Johnson drilled three three-pointers and a layup and senior swingman Phil Barnes (Georgetown, Cayman Islands/Clinton C.C.) hit a layup to open up a seven-point advantage with 10:28 remaining in the half.

Goldey-Beacom answered back with an 13-7 run of its own to narrow Le Moyne's lead to a point with 5:51 left in the stanza. Darnell Cephas connected for five points with Parham capping the streak with a layup. Le Moyne closed out the half with a 17-4 streak to take a 44-30 lead into the intermission. Corbin scored off a layup to start the run, Barnes followed with back-to-back baskets and Ekperigin scored seven of his 10 first-half points to extend the Le Moyne lead.

Over the opening nine minutes of the second half, the two squads traded baskets as the Dolphins' lead bounced between 11 and 16 points. Following a pair of foul shots by Sam McDuffie cut Goldey-Beacom's deficit to 11 points, freshman guard James Cormier (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull/Proctor Academy) hit a jumper following a steal by junior forward Kevin Hassett (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Mountain/Iona College), Johnson drilled a three-pointer and Ekperigin recorded a layup to give Le Moyne an 18-point advantage with 9:06 left in the contest.

Over the next 4:36, Le Moyne built its lead to a game-high 22 points with an 8-4 scoring span, capped by a layup from junior center Mike McDonough (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg). The Lightning closed the game with 11 of the contest's final 16 points to deliver the final score. Parham scored four of his team-best 15 points in the streak.

Le Moyne (5-5), which has won three consecutive games, returns to action on Monday, Dec. 29 at Felician at 2:00 p.m.
