MBB: EKPERIGIN AND CORBIN LEAD DOLPHINS PAST FELICIAN,
91-74
Rutherford, N.J. - Junior forward Laurence Ekperigin
(Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) scored 24 points and
junior guard Damani Corbin (Brooklyn, N.Y./Frederick
Douglass) scored 22 points to lead the Le Moyne College
men's basketball team to a 94-71 non-conference victory over
Felician College on Monday afternoon at Job Gym.
Ekperigin and Corbin combined to score the first 15 points of the
second half for the Dolphins to give their team a lead they would
not relinquish. Ekperigin, who scored 11 points in the span, capped
the 15-10 run by the Dolphins with an alley-oop dunk off a feed
from freshman guard James Cormier (Trumbull,
Conn./Trumbull/Proctor Academy).
Freshman guard Chris Johnson (Lindenhurst,
N.Y./Lindenhurst), the reigning freshman of the week in
the Northeast-10 Conference, connected for 11 of Le Moyne's next 15
points as the Dolphins jumped out to a 70-59 lead with just under
nine minutes remaining in the contest. Johnson, who dished out a
career-best four assists in the game, drilled three consecutive
three-pointers and converted a jumper in the streak.
After trading baskets over the next six minutes, Le Moyne recorded
the final 10 points of the game to deliver the final score. Johnson
started the final scoring run with a three-pointer, Corbin followed
with five straight points and senior swingman Phil Barnes
(Georgetown, Cayman Islands/Clinton C.C.) capped the game
with a layup.
In the first half, the score was tied 13 times, while two squads
exchanged the lead on 11 occasions. The Dolphins were able to take
a three-point lead on a number of occasions, but following the
half's 13th tie, Felician registered an 8-2 run to take a six-point
lead at 42-36 with 1:09 remaining in the stanza. Sophomore forward
Kevin Roth (Lake View, N.Y./St. Francis) hit a
free throw and Johnson drilled three consecutive free throws after
being fouled on a three-point attempt to pull the Dolphins with
42-40 at the intermission. Corbin, who finished the game one point
shy of his career high, led all scorers in the opening half with 13
points. Devon Young tallied 12 points for the host Golden
Falcons.
Ekperigin, who grabbed his 600th career rebound at the 3:30 mark of
the second half, pulled down 12 rebounds in the game to register
his fifth consecutive double-double and fourth straight 20-point,
10-rebound performance. Ekperigin was 11-of-11 from the field to
push his career point total to 996. Corbin hit 10-of-12 shots and
dished out six assists in the game. Johnson finished the contest
with 17 points, including 14 in the second half, while Roth and
Barnes each tallied 11. Young finished the game with 24 points and
was joined in double-digits by Ethan Kennedy (17) and Andrew August
(10).
