LE MOYNE MEN'S BASKETBALL PICKED FOURTH IN NORTHEAST-10 CONFERENCE
PRESEASON POLL
South Easton, Mass. - The Le Moyne College men's basketball team
has been selected to finish fourth in the Northeast-10 Conference
standings, as voted on by the league's 16 head coaches. Merrimack
College was picked to win the regular season title and received
seven of the possible 16 first-place votes for 214 total points, as
announced by the conference on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
Bentley University, last season's regular season champion and East
Region finalist, garnered the seven first-place votes to finish
second with 212 points. UMass Lowell, the number two seed in last
year's conference tournament, was tabbed third after receiving 191
points, including one first-place vote. Le Moyne, which advanced to
the conference championship game one year ago, recorded 189 points
to place fourth, while Stonehill picked up the final first-place
vote in earning 164 points to finish fifth.
Saint Anselm received 140 points to finish sixth with Assumption
and Southern New Hampshire each earning 132 points to tie for
seventh place and round out the top half of the standings.
Conference newcomer Adelphi picked up 120 points to begin the
bottom half of the poll, while American International rounds out
the top-10 with 102 points. Saint Rose (88), Pace (68), Franklin
Pierce (55), Saint Michael's (50), New Haven (48) and Southern
Connecticut State (15) were selected to round out the
standings.
Le Moyne returns 11 letterwinners, including four starters, from
last year's 20-11 squad. The Dolphins are led by preseason
All-American Laurence Ekperigin (Cortlandt Manor,
N.Y./Walter Panas). Ekperigin, named the conference's
Player of the Year and a First Team for the second straight year,
was third in the NE-10 in scoring at 18.3 points per game and led
the league in rebounding (11.4), field goal percentage (.684) and
blocked shots (81) last season. Sophomore guard Chris
Johnson (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) was named to the
NE-10 All-Rookie Team after averaging 13.8 points and connecting on
a Le Moyne freshman-record 99 three-pointers in his first year.
Graduate student guard Damani Corbin (Brooklyn,
N.Y./Frederick Douglass) posted 8.7 points and 4.5 assists
per game a year ago.
The Dolphins open the season on Tuesday, Nov. 3 with an exhibition
game against Syracuse University at 7:00 p.m. They open the regular
season on Sunday, Nov. 15 at Caldwell and begins conference play on
Tuesday, Nov. 18 against Southern Connecticut State at 7:30 p.m.
The Northeast-10 Championship begins on Saturday, Feb. 27 with
First Round action and concludes on Saturday, March 6 with the
championship final.
