LE MOYNE NAMES RICH BARNES ASSISTANT MEN'S LACROSSE COACH
Former Cortland State head coach to join Dolphins staff

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Former Cortland State head men's lacrosse coach Rich Barnes has been named an assistant coach at Le Moyne College. Barnes, the 2006 USILA NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Coach of the Year, led the Red Dragons to their first NCAA Division III national championship and an 18-3 mark in 2006.

"This is a win-win for Le Moyne College and for Rich Barnes," head coach Dan Sheehan said. "He's been coaching the game for an awful long time and his experiences are going to be of benefit to the program. His personality is the perfect match with my staff and our program."

After three stints as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Barnes was named the interim head coach at Cortland prior to the 2006 season. He led the Red Dragons to four NCAA tournament wins, capped by a 13-12 overtime victory versus three-time defending champion Salisbury in the championship game. That victory snapped Salisbury's NCAA all-division lacrosse record 69-game winning streak and gave Cortland its first national championship since capturing the Division II crown in 1975.

Barnes re-joined the Cortland coaching staff as an assistant and team's defensive coordinator in 2005. Barnes was an All-America goalie for the Red Dragons in both 1988 and 1989 and was the team's Red Letter Award winner in 1989. He was also a junior college All-American in 1987 at Herkimer Community College.

Barnes earned a bachelor's degree from Cortland in 1989 and a master's degree in 1991. He also was as an assistant at Ithaca College from both 1991-92 and 1998-2004. The Bombers advanced to the national semifinals in both 1992 and 2002. In his first stint at Ithaca, Sheehan was a midfielder for the Bombers.

A 1985 graduate of Cortland High School, Barnes earned all-league lacrosse honors three times for the Purple Tigers. He served as the junior varsity head coach at Homer High School from 1993-95 and is currently employed in the Homer Central school district.

Barnes, a longtime member of the Le Moyne College Lacrosse Camp staff, resides in Cortland with his wife Sue and their two children.

Le Moyne (18-0 in 2006) has won two of the last three NCAA Division II National Championships. After Cortland topped Salisbury for its national championship at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field on May 28, the Dolphins capped an unbeaten season with a 12-5 win over Dowling. Le Moyne will return five All-America selections to their roster in 2007, including national goalkeeper of the year Jared Corcoran and the top midfielder, Matt Cassalia.
