LE MOYNE'S BRANDON SPILLETT NAMED MLS OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Compliments of the Rochester Rattlers Communications office - (Rochester, NY)... Major League Lacrosse announced today that Rochester Rattler Brodie Merrill has been named the Defensive Player of the Week. Attackman Brandon Spillett also earned Offensive Player of the Week accolades following Rochester's 16-11 win over Philadelphia last Saturday.
Merrill recorded one goal, two assists and 10 ground balls in the team's third straight victory. His lone goal was shorthanded and tied the game at eight in the third quarter. This season, he has played in five games and is second in the MLL with 44 ground balls. He also has three goals and six assists. Last week, he was named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team.
Last season, he was named the 2006 Warrior Defensive Player of the Year. He led all defensemen with 12 points (6+1+5) and also scooped up 95 ground balls, which was the second most in the league and the most among defensemen.
Spillett had his best game as a pro, registering four goals and one assist in Rochester's 16-11 win over Philadelphia. He also netted his first professional game-winner in the third quarter. The Liverpool, NY, native has 10 goals and three assists in three games in his first season in the league.
This weekend, the Rattlers (3-2) will head to the nation's capital to take on the Washington Bayhawks (4-3) on Saturday, June 30th at 4:00 p.m. The game is the second and final meeting between the two teams. Washington defeated Rochester 13-12 on May 26th in Rochester. The contest will be broadcast live on WYSL 1040 AM and wysl1040.com.
