TOP-RANKED MEN’S LACROSSE CRUISES TO 21-5 WIN AT PACE
Milton, N.Y. – Senior attackmen Nate Frechette (Manlius, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and Tyler Prevost (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart/Onondaga C.C.) each registered five points to lead the top-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to a 21-5 win over Pace University on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Hudson Valley Dome.
Pace got on the scoreboard first as Matt Gebhardt found the back of the net 2:05 into the contest.
Le Moyne answered back 55 seconds later to start a 3-0 spurt. Following a save by Pace goalkeeper Timothy Izzo, junior attackman Chris Button (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) picked up the loose ball and deposited it into the net. After almost seven minutes of scoreless action, Frechette gave the Dolphins the lead with his first goal of the day off a pass from freshman attackman Mike Jenkins (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) with 5:02 left in the first quarter. Just 49 seconds later, junior midfielder Tim Beach (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) put the Dolphins up 3-1 after taking a pass from Prevost.
Gebhardt pulled the Setters back to within one with an unassisted goal with 2:29 left in the quarter, but junior face-off specialist Kam Bumpus (Marshfield, Mass./Needham/Bridgton Academy) won the ensuing face-off and raced in to score his fourth goal of the year just nine seconds later.
The Dolphins scored six goals in the second quarter to extend their lead to 10-2 at halftime. Junior midfielder Andrew Chadderdon (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) netted the first goal of the quarter at the 9:15 mark off a pass from Prevost. Just under two minutes later, Button finished off a feed from Bumpus, while finding the back of the net again 2:02 later off a pass from Prevost for his conference-best 16th goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Joe Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) pushed Le Moyne's lead to six with his eighth goal of the campaign with 4:23 remaining after taking a pass from Frechette, who then picked up his 12th goal of the year 56 seconds later. Sophomore midfielder Alec Westerhoff (Lagrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township/Bridgton Academy) finished off the scoring in the half by finding the back of the net off a pass from Prevost with 1:17 left.
Le Moyne extended its run to eight consecutive goals 46 seconds into the third quarter as Chadderdon finished off a feed from Westerhoff.
Matt Mirabito snapped a Pace scoring drought of 20:26 with an unassisted goal at the 13:03 mark.
Frechette pushed Le Moyne's lead back to nine with 10:26 remaining in the quarter. On the goal, Prevost earned his 19th assist of the year, tied for the second-most in the nation.
With each team playing a man down, Matthew Cossidente pulled Pace within 12-4 with an unassisted tally at the 7:01 mark.
The Dolphins closed out the quarter with three goals over the final 5:50. Following a save by Pace goalkeeper Connor Brophy, Chadderdon fed Frechette for his 14th goal of the year. Sophomore attackman Kevin Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) became the eighth Dolphin to find the back of the net in the game with 3:12 left in the quarter off a pass from Jenkins. Chadderdon ended the scoring in the stanza with his seventh goal of the year with 26 seconds left.
Off the opening face-off of the fourth quarter, junior midfielder Matt Klepper (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Merrimack) fired a shot into the net off a pass from junior face-off specialist Cameron Fedish (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley). Just 50 seconds later, junior midfielder Mike DeBottis (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) netted an extra-man goal off a pass from senior midfielder Doug Bailey (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy). Sophomore long-stick midfielder Nick Hourigan (Rexford, N.Y./Shenendehowa) got into the scoring column for the second time in his career with 12:15 remaining after taking a pass from freshman Andrew Jackson (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) off a successful clear. Following a Pace holding penalty, Bailey tallied his third goal of the season with 10:57 left off a pass from Kelly. Sophomore Nick Keeler (Apalachin, N.Y./Vestal) followed 32 seconds later with his second man-up goal of the year off another feed from Kelly. DeBottis finished off Le Moyne's scoring in the game with 7:14 left after taking a pass from Bailey.
Frank Buffalino ended the game's scoring with 1:29 to go off a pass from Cossidente.
Senior goalkeeper Jeff White (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius HS) made four saves over the first three quarters to earn the win between the pipes. Izzo took the loss after stopping six of 16 shots put on goal in the first half.
Le Moyne (6-0, 3-0 NE-10), which won its 58th consecutive Northeast-10 Conference game and its 32nd straight regular season contest, returns home to face Bentley University, which received votes in this week's USILA poll, on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
