DOLPHINS FALL TO DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMP FRANKLIN PIERCE, 2-1, IN OT

Rindge, N.H. - Junior Sean Ahern scored 5:31 into overtime to lead defending national champion Franklin Pierce to a 2-1 win over #14 Le Moyne on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at Sodexho Field in Rindge, N.H.

Franklin Pierce, which captured its first Division II national championship last year, got on the scoreboard first midway through the opening half. Tom Reilly headed in a corner kick by Kensaku Tsuji from the far post. The two teams were scoreless over the final 20 minutes of the half to go into intermission with the score 1-0.

After a scoreless opening 36 minutes to the second half, senior Matt Pecheone (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) knotted the score at one apiece at the 81:37 mark. After missing his initial shot wide right, Pecheone tapped in a crossing pass from the right side by Joe Viviano (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) at the left post. Pecheone, the reigning Northeast-10 Conference player of the week, leads the Dolphins with five goals. Each team took a shot in the closing minutes of regulation, but could not connect.

Following a foul on the Dolphins, Ahern drove the ball into the lower left side of the goal from eight yards out after Tsuji's cross on a free kick from the left side was redirected by Daniel Kijowski.

Le Moyne and Franklin Pierce each registered 14 shots in the contest, while the Dolphins held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Steve White (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) made three saves in net for Le Moyne, while Carl Contrascier stopped two shots on goal for the Ravens.

Le Moyne (3-1-1, NE-10 1-1) returns to action at home against Bentley on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1:00 p.m.
