MSOC: REINA AND MARTIN LEAD DOLPHINS PAST SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT 2-0
Syracuse, N.Y - Sophomore Angelo Reina (Frankfurt,
N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) and freshman Bryce Martin
(Cazenovia, N.Y./Chittenango) each tallied goals to lead
the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Southern
Connecticut State in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday at
the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.
Reina, the conference co-freshman of the year last season,
broke a scoreless tie with his second goal of the season in the
23rd minute. After junior goalkeeper Steve White (Cortland,
N.Y./Cortland) picked off an Owls corner kick and punted
the ball down field, Reina chipped the ball over the goalkeeper
from just inside the penalty box.
Four minutes later, Martin scored his first career goal from eight yards out on a bouncing ball through the penalty box. Following the restart, Southern Connecticut goalkeeper Andrew Esposito made two point-blank saves on shots by junior Brice Rudat (Nassau, N.Y./Columbia) and sophomore Joe Viviano (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse).
In the second half, the Dolphins controlled possession of the ball throughout the half, but could not add to their total.
The Dolphins outshot the Owls 18-8 in the contest, including 8-3 in the opening half, while each team registered six corner kicks. White did not need to record a save in the contest to post his second consecutive shutout and third of the season, while Esposito stopped three shots for the Owls.
Le Moyne (5-2-2, NE-10 3-2-1), the fifth-ranked team in the latest NSCAA/adidas® regional rankings, return to action on Saturday, Sept. 27 in Colchester, Vt. against St. Michael's at 12:00 p.m.
