DOLPHINS SCORE UPSET WIN OVER NO. 13 MERRIMACK, 2-1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomores Angelo Reina (Frankfurt, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) and Sean Lawlor (Kirkham, Preston/Baines School) each netted a goal for the Le Moyne College men’s soccer team as the Dolphins dropped No. 13 Merrimack, 2-1, in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. Reina’s goal was his fourth in three games and Lawlor’s was his second of the season.

Merrimack came into the game ranked second in the latest NSCAA/adidas East Regional rankings and No. 13 in the national poll. The Warriors nearly jumped on top two minutes into the game but senior Wayne Sygrove’s shot struck the crossbar and was kicked over the goal by Le Moyne junior goalkeeper Steve White (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland).

Reina scored his fifth goal of the season at the 16:19 mark on a breakaway. Freshman Jesse Carr (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) delivered a ball perfectly to Reina, who touched once, sidestepped Merrimack senior goalkeeper Rob Pedra and slid the ball into the right side of the net. Le Moyne doubled its lead 17 minutes into the second half when Lawlor netted his second header goal of the season. Carr delivered a free kick to the goal box which was headed by senior Brandon Morse (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee) before being sent home by Lawlor.

The Warriors responded less than three minutes later, at the 64:31 mark of the game, when Tiago Dalboni scored his fourth goal of the season on a breakaway. Dalboni dribbled down the middle of the field with a Le Moyne defender at his side then chipped the ball over a diving White into the lower right corner of the net.

White and a unit of Lawlor, senior Bennett Grubbs (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette), junior Davide Dipaola (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) and freshman Marcus Debottis (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) anchored a defensive effort that held the Warriors scoreless for the game’s final 25 minutes. Le Moyne’s defense has yet to allow more than two goals in a game this season and has not surrendered a first-half score since a Sept. 9 double-overtime loss to Franklin Pierce.

The Dolphins held a 12-9 advantage in the shots category for the game but the Warriors earned six corner kicks to Le Moyne’s four. Pedra finished with three saves in goal for Merrimack (8-2-2, NE-10 5-2-1).

Le Moyne (8-2-2, NE-10 5-2-1), who came into the game ranked fourth in the latest NSCAA/adidas East Regional rankings, hosts New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action Wednesday at 4 p.m.
