DOLPHINS FALL IN DOUBLE OVERTIME TO FRANKLIN PIERCE 1-0 IN
NCAA FIRST ROUND
BROOKHAVEN, NY - John Torstensson’s (Falkoping,
Sweeden) double overtime goal lifted the defending
national champion Franklin Pierce to a 1-0 victory over Le Moyne on
Friday in the first round of the NCAA Division II men’s
soccer tournament. The Dolphins wrap up their 2008 campaign with a
13-6-3 overall record, 9-3-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
The Dolphins opened the game with an aggressive offense that
yielded six shots against only one for Franklin Pierce. As the
weather turned with a light drizzle, the game shifted to a
defensive battle with both teams deadlocked at 0-0 following 90
minutes.
Following a scoreless first overtime, Torstensson was able to notch
the game winner from fellow midfielder Frantz Francios
(Saint-Marc, Haiti) in the 104th minute. Ravens freshman
goalkeeper Vinny Papageorgio (Wilmington, MA)
recorded seven saves on the day while Le Moyne net minder
Steve White (Cortland, NY / Cortland) registered
three saves.
“Both teams played a great game and, in the end, it was the
one goal that won it” said senior midfielder Brandon
Morse (Lima, OH / Shawnee). “It’s always a
tough game against Franklin Pierce but I think we went out there
and put as much pressure on them as we could.”
The sixth-seeded Ravens (13-7-2) will advance to take on the
second-seeded Dowling Golden Lions (15-3-0) on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
