MSOC: REINA RALLIES DOLPHINS WITH TWO GOALS IN 2-1 OVERTIME VICTORY OVER NO. 15 DOWLING
Syracuse, N.Y. - Junior forward Angelo Reina (Frankfort, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) scored two goals for the second game this season to lead Le Moyne College to a come-from-behind 2-1 overtime victory over No. 15 Dowling College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.
Dowling, the 2008 National runner-up, took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on a goal by Lamine Traore. Traore, a Third Team NSCAA All-America selection in 2008, received a pass from Harald Gundhus and blasted a shot inside the left post from 18 yards out at the 33:19 mark. Despite being able to get off three shots over the final five minutes of the half, the Dolphins were unable to net the equalizer before halftime.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Reina streaked down the left side of the field with the ball. Dowling goalkeeper Matt Thavenius came up with a kick save on Reina's first shot, but Reina was able to direct the rebound past Thavenius and into the back of the goal. Dowling held a slight 5-4 advantage in shots over the final 40 minutes of the second half, but neither team could score the go-ahead goal.
After playing the first 18 minutes of overtime without a goal, sophomore back Bryce Martin (Cazenovia, N.Y./Chittenango) served a crossing pass into the penalty box where Reina headed the ball from the top right corner of the goal box into the far left corner of the goal for the game-winner with just 1:33 remaining in the overtime period.
Senior goalkeeper Steve White (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) registered two saves to record his program-record-tying 36th career victory. Thavenius stopped two shots as well for the Golden Lions. Each team posted 12 shots, while the Dolphins held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (2-0-1), which is unbeaten at home over its last 11 games, returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 10 for a non-conference match-up against Wilmington at 4:00 p.m.
