RALLY COMES UP SHORT AS DOLPHINS FALL AT #4 DOWLING, 2-1
Brookhaven, N.Y. – Fourth-ranked Dowling scored a pair of goals in the first half to defeat the Le Moyne College men's soccer team, 2-1, in non-conference action on Sunday evening at Golden Lions Field.
The Golden Lions, who advanced to the NCAA semi-finals last year, got on the scoreboard just under 19 minutes into the contest. Mouhamed Mboup carried the ball towards the endline on the right side of the field before crossing the ball in front of the net. Keith Vigorito charged into the goal box and drilled the pass into the left side of the goal from three yards out at the 18:43 mark.
Just under 12 minutes later, Dowling doubled its lead off of a free kick. Defender Chris Cano served the free kick in front of the net, where Sean Dougherty knocked the ball into the right corner of the goal.
After Dowling controlled play over the opening 20 minutes of the second, the Dolphins were able to cut their deficit in half on their first shot of the half. Sophomore midfielder Emmanuel Chanelo (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) sent a cross from the right side of the field towards the middle of the field, where classmate Michael Spadine (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) blasted the ball into the right corner of the net from 10 yards out at the 66:16 mark.
The Dolphins had four shots over the final 22 minutes of action, including a pair that needed to be saved by Dowling goalkeeper Chris Kucera, but were unable to net the equalizer.
Sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Silva (Brampton, Ontario/St. Augustine), who allowed multiple goals for just the third time in 16 career starts, made two saves in between the pipes for the Dolphins. Kucera turned away two shots in going the distance for the Golden Lions.
Le Moyne (1-1), which tied the Golden Lions, 1-1, in Brookhaven last year, returns to action on Wednesday against Post University at 4:00 p.m.
