DOMINICAN SCORES TWO LATE GOALS FOR 2-0 WIN OVER DOLPHINS
Men's Soccer vs. Dominican - October 12, 2011
Syracuse, N.Y. – Jorge Zubillaga scored two goals in the final six minutes of action to lead Dominican to a 2-0 win over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex.
Over the opening 45 minutes of action, the teams combined for 15 shots, but could not find the back of the net. Dominican's best scoring opportunity came in the 22nd minute as Christopher Walsh had his shot bang off the crossbar. Le Moyne's best chance came with 3:24 remaining in the half, but sophomore Michael Spadine (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) put his shot over the crossbar.
The Dolphins threatened to score 5:47 into the second half, but Spadine had his shot saved by Dominican goalkeeper Brandon Heembrock.
The Chargers broke through with the game-winning goal with 5:49 remaining in the contest. The Chargers were awarded a penalty kick after freshman defender Trevor Creedon (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) pulled down Zubillaga on a through ball into the penalty box. Zubillaga then converted the kick into the left side of the goal for his fourth tally of the year.
With Le Moyne playing with all 11 players pushed up into its offensive end of the field, the Chargers capitalized for their second goal. Walsh collected a ball on the right side of the field and ball up field to Zubillaga, who outraced sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Silva (Brampton, Ontario/St. Augustine) to the ball and shot it into the empty net from 20 yards.
Silva finished the game with two saves, one in each half, while Heembrock turned away seven shots, including six in the opening 45 minutes of action. The Dolphins out-shot their visitors, 16-9, including 11-4 in the first half, while taking six of the game's nine corner kicks.
Le Moyne (7-5-1) gets back into Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday at home against Stonehill at 3:30 p.m.
