SWIM: DOLPHINS SWEEP UTICA IN SEASON-OPENING
MEET
Utica, N.Y. - Senior Nicole Murphy (Camillus, N.Y./West
Genesee) and freshman Scott
Thieke (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) each won two
individual events and were apart of two relay victories as the Le
Moyne College men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept
Utica College on Saturday afternoon at Utica College Pool. The
women's team opened the season with a 183-46 win over the Pioneers,
while the men's team recorded a 171-42 victory.
Murphy swam the second leg for the first-place 200-yard medley
relay team to open the meet. The quartet of Murphy, Sarah
Casey (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley), Mary
Chidsey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and Sarah
Salanger (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) finished in
1:56.60. Murphy registered individual victories in the 100-yard
breaststroke (1:10.33) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.35). Murphy
also teamed with Maggie Donovan (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego),
Julia Jones (Fayetteville, N.Y./ Fayetteville-Manlius) and
Rosie Slater (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) for
a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 4:00.40 to
close out the meet.
Sophomore Katie O'Donnell (Delmar,
N.Y./Bethlehem), who was named the Northeast-10 Conference
Freshman of the Year last season, won three individual events on
the afternoon. O'Donnell topped the field in the 200-yard butterfly
(2:12.67), 100-yard butterfly (59.67) and the 200-yard IM
(2:16.18). Salanger added a pair of individual wins on the day. She
won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:02.72 and the 500-yard freestyle in
5:30.92. Seniors Casey and Kayla Ehle (Baldwinsville,
N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) won the 200-yard
backstroke (2:18.51) and 100-yard freestyle (56.87) respectively,
while sophomores Chidsey and Maureen McDonough (Staten
Island, N.Y./St. Joseph Hill Academy) were victorious in
the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.67) and the 1,000-yard freestyle
(11:47.48).
On the men's side, Thieke swam the anchor leg for the meet-opening
victory in the 200-yard medley relay. Thieke teamed with sophomore
Drew Acquaviva (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem),
freshman Tim Gallivan (Camillus, N.Y./West
Genesee) and sophomore Joe Taylor (Essex Fells,
N.J./West Essex) to finish in 1:44.15. Thieke picked up
individual first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.53)
500-yard freestyle (5:14.82) and led off for the victorious
400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Thieke, juniors Sean
Hosford (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City)
and Sam Hogan (Waverly,
N.Y./Waverly) and sophomore Mike
Ablan (Gouverneur, N.Y./Gouverneur) finished in
3:31.45.
Acquaviva and Taylor each won a pair of individual events.
Acquaviva was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle (23.10) and
200-yard backstroke (2:06.64), while Taylor earned wins in the
100-yard breaststroke (1:06.47) and 200-yard IM (2:13.58).
Gallivan, Hogan and Hosford each added individuals wins to go with
their relay victories. Gallivan won the 100-yard butterfly (57.84),
Hogan topped the field in the 200-yard butterfly (2:24.20) and
Hosford won the 100-yard freestyle (49.56). Sophomore
Andrew Dearing (Kenmore, N.Y./Canisius HS) won the
1,000-yard freestyle, junior Ken Margrey (Baldwinsville,
N.Y./C.W. Baker) touched the wall first in the 100-yard
backstroke and freshman James Walker (Liverpool,
N.Y./Liverpool) picked up the victory in the 200-yard
breaststroke to complete the sweep of the swimming events by the
Dolphins.
