MTEN: DOLPHINS SUFFER 8-1 LOSS AT ROCHESTER IN SPRING
OPENER
Rochester, N.Y. - Freshman Andrew Gleason (Gorham,
Maine/Cheverus) registered a victory at fourth singles,
but the Le Moyne College men's tennis team lost to the University
of Rochester, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon on the Rochester campus.
Gleason defeated Matt Volkov in three sets at fourth singles to
record Le Moyne's lone victory of the day. Gleason took the first
set, 6-4, dropped the second set, 6-0, but responded to win the
third set 6-4.
Brian Bowman downed freshman Brian Rice (Syracuse,
N.Y./Westhill) at first singles, 6-2, 6-1, while Bennett
Peterson topped freshman Daniel Sullivan (Auburn,
N.Y./Auburn), 6-4, 6-4 at second singles. At third
singles, Patrick Sheehan defeated freshman James Shelp
(Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) by scores of 6-1
and 6-3. Rochester closed out singles action with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-5
victory at fifth singles by Dan Barbash over freshman
Joseph Persia (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) and
Jeff Zink registered a 6-1, 6-3 win over freshman Cameron
Smith (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) at sixth
singles.
The Yellowjackets swept the Dolphins in the three doubles matches.
Peterson and Bowman teamed for an 8-4 victory at first doubles over
Rice and Sullivan. At second doubles, Sheehan and Volkov beat Shelp
and senior Ben Jordan (Cassville, N.Y./Mt.
Markham) by an 8-4 score, while Zink and Barbash combined
for an 8-1 victory over senior Chris Meeker (Wampsville,
N.Y./Oneida) and Persia at third doubles.
Le Moyne (2-6) returns to the court on Sunday, March 1 at Elmira
at 1:00 p.m.
