TEN: SULLIVAN ADVANCES TO FINALS AT ITA EAST
REGIONALS
Philadelphia, Pa. - Sophomore Dan Sullivan (Auburn,
N.Y./Auburn) won four singles matches in advancing to the
finals to lead the Le Moyne College men's tennis team at the ITA
East Regionals at the weekend tournament on September
18th - 20th. On the women's side,
Tirzah Walrath (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) advanced
to the "Sweet 16" in the Women's "A" bracket.
On his way to the finals, Sullivan defeated Julius Twyman of
Chestnut Hill College, 8-5, while also posting victories against
Tim McHugh, Liam Hoare, and Sean Pahler all from Merrimack with
scores of 8-6, 8-5, and 8-4 respectively. Sullivan fell in the
finals by the score of 6-0, 6-1 to Temur Nanikashavili of Queens
College.
Competing in men's "B" singles for the Dolphins were
freshman Cooper White (Syracuse,
N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) and sophomores Andrew
Gleason (Gorham, Maine/Cheverus), James Shelp (Pittsford,
N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland), Brian Rice (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill),
Cameron Smith (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley), and
Joe Persia (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport). All
would advance to the second round of play. Shelp and Smith dropped
their matches in the second round, while White would lose to
eventual champion Temur Nanikashavili, 8-2, in the third round.
Following a second round win over USP's Billy Fine, Gleason would
fall in the next round to Victor Suski of Bentley University 8-6.
Rice followed up an 8-0 win in the second round over Dowling's
Kevin Lotito with an 8-5 setback to Pahler. After winning his first
two matches, Persia would fall in the third round to Merrimack's
Christopher Toegemann by a score of 8-5.
For the women's "A" singles competition, Walrath defeated Brittany
Aimono of Georgian Court in the first round of play 6-1, 6-0.
Following her first win, she won her next match against Southern
New Hampshire University's Kara Pease by a similar score of 6-1,
6-1. Walrath would then fall in the third round to Somadi Druker of
Queens College 6-2, 6-4. The ‘Phins Allison Cohen
(Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) also competed
in this bracket, losing in her first match to Kelly Fleszar from
Bentley University by a score of 7-6 (3), 2-6, 10-4.
In the women's "B" singles bracket, Le Moyne would compile a
record of 4-4, going 3-1 in the first round. Freshman
Rebecca Black (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon)
topped Chestnut Hill College's Kristen Wasson with a score of 8-3
in the opening round. Black would lose in her next match against
Leah White of Stonehill, 8-0. Senior Marielle Artessa
(Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) edged Georgian Court's Natalie
Grieci 8-5 in the first round of play, but would be defeated by
Irma Rodriguez-Lockwood of Bryant in her next match. The Dolphins'
Caroline Tisdell (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers
Academy) would topple her first two opponents Maria
Perevezentseva of Queens College and Brittany Villa of Philadelphia
University by scores of 8-3, 8-2 respectively. Tisdell fell in the
third round to Rachael Litton of Bentley. Rounding out the women's
"B" singles for Le Moyne was Elizabeth Rhode (Penn Yan,
N.Y./Penn Yan Academy), who lost to Jennifer Zastrow of
Southern New Hampshire University.
The Dolphins' men's doubles teams of Sullivan/Rice, Gleason/White
and Shelp/Persia all advanced to the second round of play. The duo
of Sullivan and Rice edged out Stonehill's Martin and Bergeron with
a score of 9-7 in the second round, but they would not be
successful in their next match against Dowling's Ribreiero and
Sinclair. Also competing in round two, the ‘Phins team of
Gleason and White was defeated by Suski and Chase of Bentley by the
score of 8-3. Le Moyne's Shelp and Persia toppled Bermeo and
Greenberg of Philadelphia University 8-0, but would lose to
eventual doubles' champions Smith and Nanikashavili of Queens
College.
In women's doubles action, Walrath and Cohen would go 1-1 in "A"
doubles competition. The duo defeated the combination of Sales and
Sancho of Goldey Beacom 8-2, but would fall to Holy Family's
Victoria-Caldas and Querubin 9-8 (7-3). In the "B" bracket, the Le
Moyne teams of Tisdell and Artessa and Black and Megan
Andolina (Fulton, N.Y./Fulton) would both lose in the
first matches of play.
The men's team returns to action on Tuesday, September 29th at
Union, while the women's team will finish its fall season on
October 2nd at conference-foe Bentley at 10:00 AM.
