ADELPHI EDGES LE MOYNE, 5-4, ON DECISIVE FIFTH-SET WIN

Syracuse, N.Y. – Ryan Villarruel claimed a three-set victory at fifth singles to break a tie and give Adelphi a 5-4 win over the Le Moyne College men's tennis team on Sunday afternoon at Gold's Gym.

The Dolphins opened the match by taking two of the three doubles matches. Seniors Daniel Sullivan (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) and Ken Schiefer (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool/Onondaga C.C.) teamed to post an 8-6 win over Andreas Hammer and Chiwete Njokanma at first doubles. Senior James Shelp (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) combined with sophomore Daryl Johnson (Minoa, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) to sweep Adrish Tewarie and Ryan White, 8-0, at third doubles. Adelphi picked up its double point at the second spot as Alex Morris and Bryan Kallenberg topped seniors Joseph Persia (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) and Andrew Gleason (Gorham, Maine/Cheverus), 8-2.

The Panthers claimed the victory in the match by winning four of the six singles matches. With the match tied at four wins apiece, Villarruel and Schiefer battled for the deciding point. Villarruel took the lead with a 6-3 win in the first set. Schiefer answered back with a 7-6 (9-7) victory in the second set to force a third-set tie-breaker. Villarruel controlled play in the deciding set en route to a 6-1 victory.

Le Moyne's two singles victories came at the third and fourth spots. Persia posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kallenberg in the third spot, while Gleason registered a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Njokanma at fourth singles. At first singles, Hammer downed Sullivan by a score of 6-2, 6-1, while Morris claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Shelp at second singles. Tewarie was victorious at sixth singles over Johnson, 6-2, 6-3.

The Dolphins (0-3, 0-3 NE-10) return to action on Friday at Assumption at 3:30 p.m.
