Le Moyne Athletics : Sarah Reed, Martha Senko pitch Dolphins to softball sweep at Dowling, Jennifer Winters homers in opener

REED AND SENKO PITCH NO. 6 LE MOYNE TO DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP AT DOWLING, 4-0 AND 5-2

HOLBROOK, N.Y. - Sophomore Sarah Reed (DeWitt, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) struck out 13 in the opener and junior Martha Senko (Pine City, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) fanned eight in the nightcap as No. 6 Le Moyne swept a softball doubleheader at Dowling. The Dolphins (8-8) won the opener 4-0 and the nightcap 5-2.

In the opener, Reed (3-5) scattered five hits for her third shutout of the season. Her 13 strikeouts are a personal-best and the most by a Le Moyne pitcher since Megan Vecchiano struck out 13 in a 2-1 9-inning loss to Wayne (Neb.) State on May 9, 2003.

In the opener, Melissa Quimby (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) doubled home Emma Murphy (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) in the top of the second for the only run the Dolphins would need. Reed singled and senior shortstop Jennifer Winters (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) homered to center to make it 3-0. Senior Ashley Anderson (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) doubled home an insurance run in the sixth inning.

Reed and junior third baseman Kristen DesLauriers (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) had two hits each in the nightcap. The Dolphins scored three runs on five hits in the top of the first for all the runs Senko would need. Winters, DesLauriers and Anderson knocked in first-inning runs.

Senko improved to 3-1 with her third complete game of the season. She struck out eight, allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned) without walking a batter.

Le Moyne, ranked sixth in the preseason NFCA Division II poll, has won four consecutive games. The preseason favorites in the Northeast-10 Conference coaches poll, the Dolphins return to action in their conference opener April 1 at home against Stonehill.
