DOLPHINS WIN TWO ON SECOND DAY OF NORTHEAST-10 TOURNAMENT
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Martha Senko (Pine City, N.Y./Elmira Free Academy) pitched a complete game six hit shutout to lead Le Moyne into the loser's bracket final. The Dolphins defeated Southern Connecticut State 2-1 in their opening game of the day and topped Bryant 2-0 in the afternoon game. Le Moyne improves to 32-14 on the season, while Southern Connecticut falls to 32-15 and Bryant drops to 24-16.
In game one, Southern Connecticut broke a scoreless tie with a run in the top of the fifth inning. The Owls plated their run on a double down the right field line by Kierstin Pry to score Amanda St. George from second base. The lead was short-lived as the Dolphins scratched for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Arcadia) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on the throw. Kristen DesLauriers (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) moved her to third by grounding out to the right side of the infield. After Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) reached on an error, Phillips scored on a failed pick-off attempt by the catcher. Emma Murphy (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) singled to left field to score Winonah Cook (Onondaga Nation/Lafeyette) from second base and give the Dolphins a 2-1 lead. Farrelly then closed out the seventh to pick up her fifth save of the season.
Caylinn Christophersen (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) allowed only four hits in six innings to earn her team-high eleventh win of the year.
In game two, Le Moyne recorded back-to-back sacrifice flies to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning. The Dolphins loaded the bases on base hits by Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) and DesLauriers to open the inning. Farrelly and Murphy each followed by flying out to the right fielder to score Schweikert and Phillips.
Senko went the distance, recording three strikeouts, while yielding only six hits and a walk in tying Christophersen for the team-lead in wins with 11.
The Dolphins return to action Sunday morning at 10 a.m. in the loser's bracket final against Merrimack. The winner advances on to play UMass Lowell at noon for the championship. The Dolphins or Warriors would need to defeat the River Hawks twice to be crowned the Northeast-10 Conference Champions, while the River Hawks only need to win one game.
