LE MOYNE GOES 2-0 IN THEIR FIRST DOUBLE HEADER AT THE REBEL SPRING INVITATIONAL
March 2, 2008
Kissimmee, FLa. - The Dolphins took on Nova Southeastern in their first game of the season at the Rebel Spring Invitational. Winning 6-2 over NSU the Dolphins show a promising 2008 season. Le Moyne played West Virginia Wesleyan in their second game of the day winning 3-2.
In the first game NSU would score single runs in the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third the Dolphins would respond by loading the bases on a walk to Bailey Phillips, a single by Sarah Reed, and a walk to Jennifer Farrelly. NSU pitcher Ashley Baker managed to come back with two strikeouts but walked Caitlin O'Neill to force in Bailey Phillips putting the Dolphins on the board trailing 2-1. Danielle Van Gorder followed with a line drive to left that eluded the dive of the left fielder Katie Speaks and allowed Van Gorder to circle the bases for an inside the park grandslam and a Dolphin 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth Farrelly closed the deal with an RBI double scoring Phillips and pushing the lead to 6-2. Le Moyne would never look back.
Caylinn Christophersen earned her first win of the year pitching for five innings. Farrelly pitched the final two innings retiring all six batters she faced including a strikeout of Normi Luciani to end the game.
Phillips led the Dolphins with two hits and two runs scored, while Van Gorder and Farrelly contributed two hits each. Van Gorder's inside the park home run drove in four big runs.
In the Second game West Virginia Wesleyan would come out in the first inning with an early run on an RBI double by Emily Nieman.
The score remained 1-0 until the fifth when West Virginia Wesleyan plated a second run on a RBI single by Desiree Sibera to make the score 2-0. Through the first five innings Le Moynes offense stalled. In the sixth inning the Dolphins began to mount a comeback. Sarah Reed would lead off with a double and move to third on an infield groundout. Reed would score on a wild pitch with a close play at the plate. Reeds acrobatic slide to avoid the tag seemed to spark the Dolphins. With two outs Emma Murphy would single bringing on pinch runner Lyndsey Balinskas. Kim Baker followed with a single and Caitlin O'Neill's booming double would plate both runners and give Le Moyne the lead.
Jennifer Farrelly would earn the win with 2 1/3 innings of strong relief. The Dolphin defense would close out the game with a crisp 4-6-3 double play ending the game and pushing the Dolphins record to 2-0. Dolphins were lead in hitting with Sarah Reeds two hits, Caitlin O'Neill's timely double, and strong pitching by freshman Jenna Vanacore and Jennifer Farrelly.
The Dolphins take on Findlay at 9 a.m. and Gannon at 1 p.m. Monday March 3 for their second day at the Rebel Spring Invitational.
