SBALL: VANACORE MOVES TO 7-0 AS #21 ‘PHINS SPLIT WITH NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, NY
– Sophomore Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, NY / Holy Trinity) improved her record to 7-0 on the season with a complete game victory over NYIT on Saturday. Le Moyne (11-3), ranked #21 in the latest national rankings, split the double header with NYIT (12-10). The Dolphins dropped game one 2-1 and rallied for a 5-2 victory in game two.

In the first game of the afternoon, pitching proved to be dominant as Le Moyne’s Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, NY / Shaker) and NYIT’s Michelle Rapp carried shutouts through the first five innings. NYIT scratched for the game’s first run in the bottom half of the sixth inning as Lia Larra drove in Martha Redondo on a triple to center field. In the top half of the seventh, the Dolphins tied the game on a lead-off home run by Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, NY / Spencerport). Brooklyn Fields led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and was pinch ran for by Marissa Brucculeri. Lisa Boystak moved Brucculeri over to third with a double to center. Rebecca Stein pushed across the game winner with a bunt to score Brucculeri and deliver NYIT a 2-1 victory. Farrelly was the tough-luck loser on the day pitching 6.2 innings, scattering four hits and striking out seven.

The Dolphins got on the board early in game two as Caitlin O’Neill (Pittsford, NY / Our Lady of Mercy) drove in two first-inning runs on a double to left field. Le Moyne increased its lead to 4-0 in the third as Bailey Phillips (Rochester, NY / Greece-Arcadia) reached on a single and scored on an error by the catcher. Freshman Barbara Shea (Clifton Park, NY / Shenendehowa) stole home for the inning's second run.

Cruising through five innings in the circle, Vanacore allowed a two-run home run in the sixth inning by Brooklyn Fields. The two runs snapped her consecutive scoreless inning streak at 38. Vanacore allowed just five hits on the afternoon, while striking out five.

Le Moyne returns to action on Sunday, March 29th as they travel to take on C.W. Post in a doubleheader beginning at noon. In an earlier meeting this season, Le Moyne defeated C.W. Post, 3-0, on March 11th at the Rebel Games in Florida.
