SB: DOLPHINS POUND OUT 29 HITS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF SAINT
MICHAEL'S, 12-1, 9-0
Syracuse, N.Y. - Freshman second baseman Kelcie Cashel
(Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) went 6-for-7 with three stolen
bases and three runs scored to lead Le Moyne College to a
doubleheader sweep over Saint Michael's on Saturday afternoon in
Northeast-10 Conference softball action at the Thomas J. Niland
Athletic Complex. The Dolphins defeated the Purple Knights 12-1 in
five innings in the opener and 9-0 in five innings in game two.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard in game one with three runs on
three hits and an error in the second inning. Freshman left fielder
Kate Waltman (Alplaus, N.Y./Niskayuna) opened the
frame by reaching on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice
bunt. Sophomore right fielder Amanda Daum (Auburn,
N.Y./Auburn) followed with a double to left center to
drive in Waltman. After a single and stolen base by freshman first
baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski), junior
center fielder Danielle VanGorder (Vestal,
N.Y./Vestal) singled just inside first base to knock in
Daum and Ford.
The Dolphins tacked on one run in the third inning before scoring
eight times in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior designated
player Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and
third baseman Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of
Mercy) each singled to open the third. Following a sac
bunt by Waltman, sophomore catcher Kim Baker (Murrieta,
Calif./Murrieta Valley) singled to center to plate
Farrelly.
Le Moyne broke the game open in the fourth with eight runs on 10
hits and an error. Ford singled and stole second, while VanGorder
followed with a single up the middle to open the inning. Following
a Saint Michael's pitching change and a steal by VanGorder, Cashel
singled up the middle to knock in Ford. Junior shortstop
Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport)
then singled to left field to move Cashel to third and score
VanGorder. Farrelly, the Northeast-10 and ECAC player and pitcher
of the week, followed with a singled down the left field line to
knock in Cashel and Schweikert. After O'Neill singled up the
middle, Waltman singled through the right side to drive in
Farrelly. As Waltman was stealing second, the ball was thrown away
to allow pinch-runner Amanda Mosich (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn
Yan Academy) to score from third base. Following a Baker
single and another Saint Michael's pitching change, Daum drove in
Waltman with a groundout. Two batters later, VanGorder capped Le
Moyne's scoring with a single to left field to knock in Baker.
The Purple Knights scored once in the top of the fifth inning, but
freshman pitcher Brenna Klein (Huntington Beach,
Calif./Ocean View) worked out of a bases loaded jam to end
the game.
Sophomore right-hander Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville,
N.Y./Holy Trinity) allowed just a first inning single,
while striking out five batters, in four innings of work to record
her team-best 11th win of the season. Each member of the Dolphins'
batting order recorded a hit, led by VanGorder and Cashel, who
registered three hits each.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins jumped on the Purple Knights early
with four runs on three hits and two errors in the first inning.
Cashel singled through the left side with one out and proceeded to
steal second base. Schweikert followed with a double down the left
field line to drive in Cashel. After freshman designated player
Barb Shea (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa)
reached on a dropped fly ball, O'Neill drove in Schweikert as she
reached on a throwing error, allowing Shea to also score. Two
batters later, Baker doubled to center field to plate O'Neill from
second.
Le Moyne added a pair of runs on three hits in the third inning.
O'Neill doubled to left field with one out and moved to third on a
groundout. Baker followed with her second double of the contest to
score O'Neill. Daum connected on a 2-2 pitch for a single to left
center to drive in Baker.
The Dolphins closed out the afternoon's scoring with three runs on
four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Schweikert followed a
one-out double by Cashel with a single to center to drive in her
double-play partner. After Schweikert stole second, Shea singled up
the middle to drive her in. After a strikeout, Waltman singled to
left center to drive in Shea for the final run of the day.
Sophomore righty Katelyn Fowler (Sandy Creek, N.Y./Sandy
Creek) tossed five shutout innings, allowing just two
hits, to register her second victory of the season. Cashel posted
three hits in the contest, while Schweikert and Baker contributed
two hits apiece.
