SB: DOLPHINS SWEEP FRANKLIN PIERCE, 1-0, 8-1, IN NORTHEAST-10
ACTION
Syracuse, N.Y. - Senior pitcher Jennifer Farrelly (Latham,
N.Y./Shaker) threw a two-hitter in game one and sophomore
catcher Kim Baker (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta
Valley) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored in game two to
lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a Northeast-10
Conference doubleheader sweep of Franklin Pierce on Saturday at the
Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins edged the Ravens,
1-0, in the opener and posted an 8-1 victory in the nightcap.
Franklin Pierce opened game one with hits by two of its first
three batters. However, Farrelly worked out of the jam by inducing
an inning-ending double play.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Dolphins would score the
only run of the contest. Freshman designated player/first baseman
Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) drew a
four-pitch walk with one out and then stole second base. Freshman
shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park,
N.Y./Shenendehowa) followed with a singled up the middle
to drive in Cashel.
Farrelly, who registered eight strikeouts in the contest, did not
allow a batter to reach base after the first inning, retiring the
final 19 Ravens she faced.
In the nightcap, Franklin Pierce posted an unearned run in the top
of the third inning to get on the scoreboard with the game's first
run. Emily Griffin reached on a two-out throwing error to keep the
inning going and then stole second. Jayme Bilafer followed with a
bloop single to left field to drive in Griffin.
The Dolphins answered back in their half of the inning with three
runs on four hits. Baker opened the frame with a double down the
right field line and Phillips followed with a single to right.
Junior center fielder Danielle VanGorder (Vestal,
N.Y./Vestal) then drove in Baker from third with a single
up the middle. After a double steal by Phillips and VanGorder,
classmate Kelly Schweikert (Rochester,
N.Y./Spencerport) drilled her third double of the day to
center field to plate Phillips and move VanGorder to third. After a
fielder's choice in which VanGorder was thrown out at home, senior
third baseman Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of
Mercy) grounded out to knock in Schweikert.
Le Moyne tacked on three additional runs in the fourth inning on
four hits. Shea singled to third base to lead off the inning and
moved to second on a sac bunt. After Baker singled and stole
second, Phillips tripled to right field to drive in Shea and Baker.
Following a pitching change, VanGorder doubled to left center to
score Phillips.
The Dolphins capped the scoring in the contest with a pair of runs
on four hits in the sixth inning. Sophomore right fielder
Amanda Daum (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) and Baker opened
the inning with a single and double, respectively. Following a
fielder's choice that retired Daum at the plate, VanGorder singled
through the right side to drive in Baker. Two batters later,
freshman pinch-hitter Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City,
N.Y./Johnson City) singled through the left side to drive
home VanGorder with the game's final run.
Sophomore righty Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy
Trinity) struck out 10 batters over six innings, while
yielding just two hits, to pick up her 13th victory of the season.
Classmate Katelyn Fowler (Sandy Creek, N.Y./Sandy
Creek) pitched the seventh inning to close out the game.
VanGorder joined Baker in posting three hits, while Phillips,
Schweikert and Cashel each registered two.
Le Moyne (27-9, NE-10 15-3), which has won 11 of its last 13 games
and holds the top spot in the conference by three games, returns to
action on Sunday against UMass Lowell at 12:00 p.m. Prior to the
contest, the Dolphins' two-member senior class of Farrelly and
O'Neill will be honored for their contributions to the program.
