SB: SHEA AND FORD DRIVE DOLPHINS TO SWEEP OF UMASS LOWELL, 3-0,
12-4
Syracuse, N.Y. - Freshman first baseman Leah Ford
(Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) drove a three-run homer to left
center in game one and freshman shortstop Barb Shea
(Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) registered three hits
and scored twice in game two to lead the Le Moyne College softball
team to a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader sweep over UMass
Lowell on Sunday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic
Complex. The Dolphins posted a 3-0 victory in game one and topped
the River Hawks 12-4 in five innings in the nightcap.
Shea and sophomore catcher Kim Baker (Murrieta,
Calif./Murrieta Valley) walked around a strikeout in the
fourth inning. On a 2-2 pitch with two outs, Ford drilled the ball
over the fence in left center for her third home run of the
season.
Senior righty Jennifer Farrelly (Latham,
N.Y./Shaker) struck out eight batters, while limiting the
River Hawks to just three hits, in her team-best 14th complete game
of the season. With her seventh shutout of the campaign, Farrelly
extended her scoreless innings streak to 14.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins blew the game open with eight runs
on six hits and four errors in the first inning. Junior second
baseman Kelly Schweikert (Rochester,
N.Y./Spencerport) gave Le Moyne a 2-0 lead with a double
to left field to drive in classmates Bailey Phillips
(Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) and Danielle
VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), who reached on a single
and an error, respectively. As Farrelly reached on a fielding
error, Schweikert came around to score on a throwing error. The
Dolphins then loaded the bases on back-to-back singles by freshman
right fielder Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy
Creek) and Shea. Senior third baseman Caitlin
O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) pushed the
lead to 5-0 with a single up the middle to knock in Farrelly and
Cashel. Consecutive walks to Baker and Ford forced in Shea for the
inning's sixth run. Le Moyne capped the scoring in the inning as
Phillips reached on a fielder's choice to drive in O'Neill and
Farrelly singled through the left side to plate Ford.
Le Moyne extended its lead to 10-0 with a pair of runs on three
hits in the second inning. Shea led off the frame with a solo blast
to center field for her third homer of the year. The Dolphins then
loaded the bases on walks to O'Neill and pinch-hitter
Katelyn Fowler (Sandy Creek, N.Y./Sandy Creek) and
a single by Phillips. Following an out, Schweikert recorded an
infield single to plate pinch-runner Kate Waltman (Alplaus,
N.Y./Niskayuna).
The River Hawks broke through in the top of the fifth inning with
four runs on six hits. Stacey Lajoie got her team on the scoreboard
with a single through the left side to drive in Hannah May, who led
off the inning with a bunt single. Following a single by Elyssa
Boris, Lindsi Panarelli drilled an 0-1 pitch to straightaway center
to pull UMass Lowell to within 10-4.
The Dolphins closed out the contest with two runs on two hits in
the bottom of the fifth. Freshman designated player Morgan
Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) singled down
the right field line to open the frame and moved to second on a
wild pitch. Cashel followed with a double to right center to
replace Edmondson on the basepaths. After a fly out, O'Neill and
Baker walked to load the bases. Fowler then drew a walk to force in
Cashel with the game's final run.
Freshman Brenna Klein (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean
View) picked up her first career victory by tossing the
final three and two-thirds innings. Sophomore Jenna
Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) retired four of
the five batters she faced before being replaced by Klein. Phillips
joined Shea with three hits in the game, while Schweikert and
Cashel posted two hits each.
Prior to the doubleheader, the Dolphins' two seniors, Farrelly and
O'Neill, were honored for their contributions to the program over
the last four years.
Le Moyne (29-9, NE-10 17-3), which continues to hold a three-game
lead for first place in the conference standings, closes out a
three-day homestand on Monday with a doubleheader against Bentley
University. First pitch has been moved up to 12:00 p.m. from the
previously scheduled time of 3:00 p.m.
