SB: DOLPHINS PICK UP TWO NORTHEAST-10 VICTORIES OVER BENTLEY,
11-2, 8-0
Syracuse, N.Y. - Senior Jennifer Farrelly (Latham,
N.Y./Shaker) struck out eight batters in game one and hit
a walk-off home run in game two to lead Le Moyne College to a
doubleheader sweep over Bentley on Monday afternoon at the Thomas
J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins won game one, 11-2, in
five innings and took the nightcap, 8-0, in five innings.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the first game with two runs
on two hits and an error in the first inning. Junior center fielder
Danielle VanGorder (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) reached
first on a wild pitch and classmate Kelly Schweikert
(Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport) walked with one out.
Farrelly followed with a single through the left side to plate
VanGorder and moved to second on a throwing error. Freshman
shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park,
N.Y./Shenendehowa) then singled to left center to drive in
Schweikert.
The Falcons evened the score in the top of the second inning on a
two-run home run to left field by Maitlyn Kraft.
Le Moyne answered back with eight runs on six hits in its half of
the frame, marking the second straight game with eight runs in a
single inning. Sophomore catcher Kim Baker (Murrieta,
N.Y./Murrieta Valley) was hit by a pitch to open the
inning and moved to second on a sac bunt. Junior left fielder
Bailey Phillips (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Arcadia)
then singled and stole second to give the Dolphins two runners in
scoring position. VanGorder followed with a single through the
right side to plate Baker, while Schweikert then doubled down the
left field line to score Phillips and VanGorder. The Dolphins then
loaded the bases as Farrelly reached on a fielder's choice, Shea
walked and two-time Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Week
Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) singled
down the left field line. Senior third baseman Caitlin
O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) then singled
up the middle to drive in Farrelly. Baker then drove in Shea as she
reached on a fielder's choice back to the pitcher. After freshman
first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski)
walked to force in Cashel, Phillips capped the inning's scoring
with a single through the left side to plate O'Neill and Baker.
Shea blasted a solo home run to left field with two outs in the
third inning to close out the scoring in the contest.
Farrelly registered her fourth consecutive victory by striking out
eight batters over the first four and two-thirds innings to improve
to 14-4 on the season. Sophomore Katelyn Fowler (Sandy
Creek, N.Y./Sandy Creek) induced a groundout to retire the
only batter she faced. Phillips and Shea each recorded two hits and
knocked in two runs in the contest, while Schweikert also drove in
a pair.
In the nightcap, Cashel blasted her second home run of the season
to left center to give the Dolphins a 2-0 lead in the second
inning. Shea, who doubled earlier in the inning, scored on the
blast.
Phillips pushed the lead to three in the third inning as she
singled and advanced to second on a fielding error, moved to third
on a groundout and scored as the catcher made an errant throw back
to the pitcher.
The Dolphins tacked on two runs in the fourth inning and scored
three times in the fifth to secure the victory. O'Neill doubled
with one out to drive in classmate Farrelly with the first run of
the inning, while Baker singled two batters later to knock in
pinch-runner Kate Waltman (Alplaus,
N.Y./Niskayuna). In the fifth, VanGorder singled with one
and proceeded to steal second base. Schweikert then recorded her
second double of the afternoon to push VanGorder across home plate.
After fouling off seven consecutive pitches, Farrelly drilled her
eighth home run of the season over the fence in left field to
deliver the win.
Sophomore righty Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy
Trinity) tied Farrelly for the team lead in wins at 14 by
striking out eight batters in five innings of work. Phillips and
Farrelly each had two hits, while Farrelly and Cashel recorded two
runs batted in each.
Le Moyne (31-9, NE-10 19-3), which has won at least 30 games for
the ninth consecutive season, returns to action on Saturday at
Southern New Hampshire at 12:00 p.m.
