SB: #23 DOLPHINS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER AT SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE,
4-3, 10-3
Manchester, N.H. - Senior Jennifer Farrelly (Latham,
N.Y./Shaker) recorded three hits, drove in four runs,
scored twice and registered a victory in the pitcher's circle to
lead the #23-ranked Le Moyne College softball team to a
doubleheader split with Southern New Hampshire on Saturday night at
Penmen Field. SNHU rallied for a 4-3 win in the opener, while the
Dolphins downed the Penmen 10-3 in the nightcap.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins jumped in front with four runs on
just one hit and two errors in the second inning. Freshman
shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park,
N.Y./Shenendehowa) led off the frame by reaching on a
throwing error and advanced to second base. Following a sac bunt
and a pop out, sophomore catcher Kim Baker (Murrieta,
Calif./Murrieta Valley) and freshman first baseman
Leah Ford (Pulaski, N.Y./Pulaski) walked to load
the bases. Two-time reigning freshman of the week Kelcie
Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek) was then hit by a pitch
to knock in Shea. Junior center fielder Danielle VanGorder
(Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) followed with a single to center to
drive in Baker and Ford, while Cashel came around to score on an
error by the shortstop.
Le Moyne tacked on a run in the top of the third inning and two
runs in the fourth. Farrelly walked to open the inning and moved to
second on a single to right by Shea. Following a sac bunt, senior
third baseman Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of
Mercy) recorded an infield single to drive in Farrelly. In
the fourth, Farrelly followed one-out singles by VanGorder and
junior second baseman Kelly Schweikert (Rochester,
N.Y./Spencerport) with a single to center to plate the two
juniors.
The Penmen broke through with three runs in the bottom of the
fifth inning. Nicole Arpin tripled to right field with two outs and
the bases loaded to drive in pinch-runner Rachel Dobinski, Karissa
Bettencourt and Valerie Martins.
The Dolphins got the three runs back in their next at-bat on three
hits and an error. Ford walked to open the inning and stole second
following a fly out. VanGorder then reached on a fielding error to
allow Ford to move to third. Schweikert then singled through the
left side to push VanGorder to third and score Ford. After
Schweikert stole second to put runners at second and third,
Farrelly single to center to drive in VanGorder and Schweikert for
the second time in the contest.
Farrelly picked up her team-best 15th victory of the season by
going the distance for the 15th time in 17 starts. The senior
hurler struck out one batter while limiting the Penmen to just four
hits. Bernstein took the loss after allowing all 10 runs (five
earned) on 10 hits. Farrelly and juniors VanGorder, Schweikert and
left fielder Bailey Phillips (Rochester,
N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) each recorded two hits in the
contest.
In the opener, Le Moyne built a 3-0 lead through the first two
innings. VanGorder singled to center with one out in the first
frame and moved to second on a groundout. After Farrelly walked and
the two runners moved up a base on a passed ball, Cashel singled to
left center to drive in VanGorder and Farrelly. In the second,
O'Neill singled down the left field line to open the inning. After
pinch runner Kate Waltman (Alplaus,
N.Y./Niskayuna) stole second, Ford singled to right field
to plate Waltman.
The Penmen rallied in the fourth inning with four runs on four
hits and an error. Martins singled, Arpin reached on an error and
Ashley Bernstein walked to load the bases. Melissa Pessotti
followed with a single center to Martins with the Penmen's first
run of the game. Michelle Maranto and Elena Anderson then
registered run-scoring singles to center and right, respectively,
to tie the game at three apiece. After Farrelly replaced starter
Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy Trinity) in
the circle, she induced a groundout to get the first out of the
inning. Andrea Clausi then drew a walk to force in Maranto with the
go-ahead run. Farrelly escaped further trouble by getting a
groundout and a pop out.
Vanacore took the loss, just her third in 17 decisions this
season, after yielding four runs (three earned) on five hits over
three innings pitched. Farrelly struck out four over the final
three innings of the game. Kyla Puccini earned the victory after
allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits over four and
one-third innings pitcher. Kelsey Griffin picked up the save by
tossing two and two-thirds innings without allowing a run.
VanGorder, Schweikert and O'Neill each posted two hits in the
game.
Le Moyne (32-10, NE-10 20-4), which had its eight-game win streak
snapped in the opener, returns to action on Sunday at Saint Anselm
at 12:00 p.m. With four games remaining, the Dolphins hold a
three-game lead in the loss column for first place in the
Northeast-10 Conference standings.
