SB: #23 DOLPHINS CLAIM THIRD STRAIGHT NE-10 REGULAR SEASON
CHAMPIONSHIP WITH SWEEP AT SAINT ANSELM, 9-1, 6-3
Manchester, N.H. - Senior Caitlin O'Neill (Pittsford,
N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) went 3-for-6 with two runs batted
in and two runs scored to lead 23rd-ranked Le Moyne College to a
Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader sweep at Saint Anselm
on Sunday afternoon at South Athletic Field. The Dolphins, who
clinched their third straight Northeast-10 regular season
championship with the two victories, won game one, 9-1, in five
innings and topped the Hawks, 6-3, in game two.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard in the first game with two runs
in the second inning without recording a hit. Senior designated
player Jennifer Farrelly (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) and
freshman shortstop Barb Shea (Clifton Park,
N.Y./Shenendehowa) each walked around a sac bunt to start
the second. Following a foul out, sophomore catcher Kim
Baker (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) reached on an
error by the center field to allow Farrelly and Shea to come around
and score.
Le Moyne, which has won six of the last seven NE-10 regular season
championships, added five runs on six hits in the third inning.
Following a pair of outs to being the inning, junior second baseman
Kelly Schweikert (Rochester, N.Y./Spencerport)
singled to left and came in to score on a double to right center by
Farrelly. Junior left fielder Bailey Phillips (Rochester,
N.Y./Greece-Arcadia) then singled to center to knock in
Farrelly, before scoring on a double to left center by Shea.
O'Neill capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run homer to
right field to give the Dolphins a 7-0 lead.
The Dolphins posted their final runs of the contest in the fourth
inning on three hits. Two-time reigning Northeast-10 freshman of
the week Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y./Sandy Creek)
opened the frame with a single and moved to third following a
single by junior center fielder Danielle VanGorder (Vestal,
N.Y./Vestal) and a walk by Farrelly. After a pop out, Shea
singled up the middle to plate Cashel and VanGorder.
The Hawks scratched across one run in the bottom of the fifth to
deliver the final score. Saint Anselm loaded the bases with one out
on singles by Liz Trafton, Julie Beaudry and Brittany Birch.
Katherine Theodorou then reached on a fielder's choice as Trafton
scored on an error.
Sophomore hurler Jenna Vanacore (Hicksville, N.Y./Holy
Trinity) picked up her 15th victory of the season to match
Farrelly for the team lead. She struck out seven batters in four
innings, while allowing just two hits. Freshman Brenna
Klein (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) worked the
fifth inning for the Dolphins. The freshman tandem of Cashel and
Shea each posted two hits.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored six runs in the opening two
innings. Cashel led off the game by reaching on an error, stole
second and scored on a single through the left side by VanGorder.
In the second, Le Moyne scored five times on four hits and three
errors after the first two batters were retired. O'Neill kept the
inning alive as she reached on an error. After sophomore right
fielder Amanda Daum (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) singled
to left field, freshman first baseman Leah Ford (Pulaski,
N.Y./Pulaski) reached base on an error by the second
baseman to allow O'Neill and Daum to score. Cashel then tripled to
right field to drive in Ford, while VanGorder followed with a
single to left to knock in Cashel. After Schweikert picked up her
fourth hit of the afternoon and Farrelly drew her fourth walk to
load the bases, Phillips reached on an error to allow VanGorder to
score from third.
Saint Anselm cut into its deficit with a run in the bottom of the
second and two in the fifth. Kate Marquis tripled with two outs in
the second and scored on a single by Beaudry. In the fifth, Megan
Walsh and Birch walked to lead off the frame. Following a
groundout, Walsh scored on a wild pitch, while Birch crossed the
plate on a groundout by Nicole Baginski.
Sophomore Katelyn Fowler (Sandy Creek, N.Y./Sandy
Creek) registered her third win of the season by going the
distance and striking out four batters. Schweikert recorded three
hits in the game, while VanGorder, O'Neill and Daum each posted
two.
Le Moyne (34-10, NE-10 22-4), which will have home-field advantage
throughout the NE-10 playoffs, close out the regular season on
Monday against Pace at 3:00 p.m.
